At the World Summer Universiade, which takes place in Chinese Taipei from August 19 to 30, the Russian men's football team shows incredible results. In the first round of the group stage, the Russians in the minority in the last minutes snatched a victory from the Brazilian national team with a score of 3:2. Following was confidently defeated the Italian team - 3:0.
Today, the Russian team will face the final match of the group stage against the United States, but it has already booked a ticket to the quarterfinals ahead of schedule. But from the first or second place of the group, it will become clear this afternoon.
Has the team always been this successful?
No. For example, in 2015 at the Universiade in Gwangju, the Russians were in a group with China, Uruguay and Ireland and could not leave it. At the group stage, the team had only one victory - over China (3:2).
The best achievement of our student football team remains gold at the 1987 Summer Universiade, where in the final the USSR defeated South Korea with a crushing score of 5:0. In 1995, Russia was close to repeating the success, but in the end was content with bronze. Since then, we have only managed to get close to the podium twice - in 2011 in Shenzhen and in 2013 in Kazan - but both times were unsuccessful.
What has changed in the national team compared to the Universiade-2015?
Literally everything. First, instead of Pavel Makeev the team was headed by the head coach of Strogino Alexey Sherstnev. Secondly, the composition of the team was completely updated. None of those who took part in the 2015 Universiade remained in it.
Moreover, representatives of amateur football league clubs have disappeared from the national team, so the overall level of teams in which “collections” are played has grown.
Are there professional football players on the team?
Yes. All football players of the Russian student team play football at a professional level. The vast majority play for PFL teams. For example, 11 "compilations" are the players of Moscow "Strogino".
However, there are representatives of the FNL and even the Premier League. Defender Mikhail Tikhonov, the son of Andrei Tikhonov, plays for the "Wings of the Soviets", and the attackers Nikolai Obolsky And Camille Mullin- for Dynamo and Rubin. And this is not surprising - at one time they played for the student team Vladimir Dyadyun, Yuri Gazinsky, Khoren Bayramyan and others.
Against the general background, only Lionel Adams. The Russian defender of Nigerian origin spent last season in the Armenian Premier League playing for Banants. However, he was called up to the national team as a free agent.
Who coaches the student team?
Alexey Sherstnev. There were no top clubs in his playing career. He played his first match as a professional football player for Ramensky Saturn in 1992, and made his debut in the Premier League only eight years later - as part of Anji. After finishing his career as a football player, he headed the youth team Dynamo, born in 1999, and now coaches Strogino.
Did you expect success this year?
Yes and no. On the one hand, the team met for the first time, and there was not much time for preparation in order to draw conclusions and forecasts. On the other hand, the main backbone of the national team and the head coach know each other well from their work at Strogino. It is noteworthy, but it is the mutual understanding within the team that the players and the coach call one of the strongest sides of the current student team.
How does the team manage to show such a result?
On luggage "Strogino". The bulk of the “compilations” not only managed to play in the Moscow club, but also achieved good results. In October last year, the team led by Sherstnev won the RFU Cup, and at the start of the 2017/18 season they won three victories in four matches.
It is worth considering the level of opponents. This year Russia was in the same group with Italy, Brazil and the USA. The first two - one of the strongest teams - have already lost to our team. The Russian coaching staff has repeatedly noted the difficulty of playing with these opponents, but their level turned out to be quite comparable to ours.
The victories are based on the huge work carried out by the team of Alexei Sherstnev. Before matches, he conducts a complete analysis of the opponent, along with assistants Sergei Svechkar, Alexander Shulga and analyst Igor Manannikov. So the team enters the field ready physically, psychologically and tactically.
What to expect from the team next?
Success. Next up is Team USA. American college football is considered one of the most developed in the world, but at the Universiade, the Americans lost both matches with a crushing score. And then - the quarterfinals. And judging by the matches played, this year the Russian team has every chance to be on the podium.
