A long time ago, in 1898 (it’s scary to imagine, 118 years ago!) the first agricultural exhibition was held in the glorious city of Verona. Not far from Bra Square, exhibition pavilions and stalls for 800 horses were built in just three months. In those distant times, the exhibition was held twice a year - in spring and autumn, and its popularity grew rapidly. In 1940, six thousand horses were sold there (!).

In 1972, an exhibition was held for the first time in Essen, which, thanks to the efforts of its organizers, quickly turned from an ordinary event, of which there are many in Europe, into a global international forum. Her name is EQUITANA. The full power of the German equestrian industry, where the cult of the horse reigns in each of the 16 federal states, is presented in 17 exhibition pavilions with a total area of 90 thousand square meters. For nine days, the Essen exhibition complex is bustling with life, the schedule of events in several showrooms and one main arena is scheduled to the minute, and in the evening, spectators are treated to a first-class horse show, and this alone is worth coming to EQUITANA.
For any equestrian, the combination of just two words “horse show” produces a magical effect. After all, it means that a sea of ammunition and equipment for the rider, souvenirs, veterinary drugs and equipment for the stables of various companies and price categories are collected under one roof. And most often, purchases are complemented by horse broods, show programs, seminars, competitions and much more. When you mention an equestrian exhibition, such giants of the equestrian industry as the German exhibitions Spoga Horse and Equitana, the Italian Fieracavalli, and the French Salon du Cheval immediately come to mind. However, the calendar of horse shows around the world includes dozens of events. This review is dedicated to the most interesting ones.
Great Britain
Appleby Horse Fair
Every year in the first week of June, the English town of Appleby-in-Westmoreland hosts one of the oldest horse shows in Europe - Appleby Horse Fair. It took place for the first time back in 1685. The streets of the city are filled with a huge number of “gypsy” carts, decorated one more bizarrely than the other, which are drawn mainly by gypsy draft horses - tinkers. They are the main characters of the exhibition. Here you can sell and buy horses themselves, as well as ammunition, as well as souvenirs. One of the most important meanings of the exhibition is cultural and historical. Just look at the traditional bathing of tinkers and other horses in the River Eden. Visiting such an exhibition is, of course, free, and the organizers advise ordinary viewers to come on Friday, Saturday and Sunday - the most spectacular and interesting exhibition days. An average of 30 thousand people visit the Appleby Horse Fair per week.
Olympia Horse Show
The Olympia Christmas International Horse Show was first held in London in 1972. Today Olympia attracts more than 80 thousand visitors who come to watch fantastic performances and enchanting horse shows. The Olympia program in 2014, as usual, promises to be varied and eventful. On the evening of December 16, for the first time in 40 years in England, there will be a full-scale performance of the Royal Andalusian Riding School. In addition, the school's bereitors will perform two 10-minute performances daily from December 16 to 22. Also, as part of the show, the World Cup stages in show jumping, driving and dressage will traditionally be held.
Shopping at the horse show at Olympia will not leave anyone indifferent. More than 250 companies present their products here, and, in addition to everything necessary for equestrian sports, here, on the eve of Christmas and New Year, you can buy gifts, souvenirs, jewelry, clothing and wine.

Germany
Pferd & Jagd
Every year since 1981, the German city of Hanover hosts the Pferd & Jagd exhibition, which is considered the largest exhibition in Europe, combining three major areas: equestrianism, hunting and fishing. Athletes and horse owners will find a wide range of equipment for horses and riders here. On the evening of December 5 and 6, as part of the exhibition, a colorful gala show “Night of Horses” will take place, and in addition, visitors can enjoy shows and demonstration performances on various disciplines of equestrian sports, including Western, as well as veterinary forums.
In 2013, 805 companies from 22 countries took part in the exhibition, and 79 thousand visitors visited the exhibition over several days.

Hippologica Berlin
One of the largest German and European horse shows has been held annually in winter in the German capital, Berlin, for 23 years. In addition to the standard exhibition and sale, the organizers offer to visit five venues where competitions in show jumping, western, and dressage are held; as well as horse parades, theatrical performances, veterinary seminars and educational lectures.
In 2013, the number of exhibitors increased to 185 companies from five countries, the number of visitors exceeded 20 thousand.
Children under 6 years old can visit Hippologica Berlin for free. Ticket price for an adult is 11 euros, for students, pensioners and children over 6 years old - 8 euros. There are also convenient tickets for the whole family (26 euros) or “group” tickets for 5 people (45 euros).
Eurocheval
Once every two years, the Eurocheval equestrian exhibition is held in the German city of Offenburg, located 20 km from the French Strasbourg. First organized in 1976, already in 2010, companies from 400 countries presented their products to the exhibition. The exhibition combines events both indoors and outdoors. The program necessarily includes horse breedings of various breeds, horse shows, presentations of Western disciplines and auctions.

Pennsylvania Horse World Expo
Every year, Harrisburg, the capital of the American state of Pennsylvania, hosts the Pennsylvania Horse World Expo. The organizers promise everyone who comes four days of seminars, entertainment and non-stop shopping. The exhibition features hundreds of horses, a “parade of breeds”, a large number of various seminars and master classes, reining and trail competitions, and exhibition driving tournaments, including ponies. The breeding of stallions of various breeds is also held here, Stallion Avenue. The highlight of the event are the performances of the equestrian theater Theater Equus - beautiful and memorable shows with an interesting script and professional choreography, the main characters of which, of course, are horses.

Midwest Horse Fair
The Midwest Horse Fair is a three-day specialized horse show that is considered one of the largest in the United States. It has been held annually in Madison, the capital of Wisconsin, since 1979. Each exhibition has a specific theme, in 2015 it is called “Galloping Into the Future”. More than 500 exhibitors offer their goods and services to equestrians; daily demonstrations, a show program, horse shows, and one of the most “American” entertainments - rodeos are held as part of the exhibition.

Cheval Passion
In 2015 in France, in Avignon, will host an international Cheval Passion horse show for the 30th time. SICAB
Since 1991, the international equestrian exhibition SICAB has been held in Seville, Spain, which is the largest equestrian exhibition in the world dedicated to only one breed of horse - the Andalusian. It is within the framework of SICAB that the championship finals for mares and stallions of the Andalusian breed are held. Dressage, show jumping and driving tournaments are also held, in which exclusively horses of this breed take part.

Jerez Horse Fair
The Spanish city of Jerez de la Frontera is famous throughout the world not only for its wine - sherry, but also for the famous exhibition that has been taking place here for more than 500 years! Exhibition fever covers the entire city, and thousands of tourists flock here from all over the world to see the colorful spectacle, in the center of which, of course, are horses. Throughout the week, the city is filled with a huge number of horsemen and carriages, with many riders dressed in national Spanish clothing. Every day they parade through the streets of Jerez in an organized parade. Special venues host local dressage and show jumping competitions, as well as horse parades and rider performances in traditional Spanish disciplines such as Doma Vaquera.

EQUITANA Melbourne
Every year, the major international horse show EQUITANA Melbourne takes place in Melbourne, Australia. It hosts competitions in various official equestrian disciplines, including the World Cup show jumping event, horsesball tournaments, reining championships and an equestrian exhibition where you can purchase various items of equestrian equipment, as well as rider equipment and souvenirs. In 2014, more than 300 companies took part in the exhibition.
One of the most memorable parts of the program is the three-day “The Way Of The Horse”. Viewers witness how three different trainers at three different venues simultaneously work with young, unbroken horses. At the end of three days, a winner is selected. The entire event is built exclusively on soft working methods.
Last year, EQUITANA Melbourne was visited by about 47 thousand people. An entrance ticket, which entitles you to visit not only the horse show, but also all other events, costs from 67 to 131 euros (depending on the day). A regular ticket to the exhibition and seminars will cost 33 euros.
Portugal
Feira Anual da Trofa
Every year, on the border of calendar winter and spring in Portugal, in Trofa, a large-scale exhibition Feira Anual da Trofa is held. It has a rich history - the exhibition was first held in 1946. Its main directions are agricultural (including fairs of cows of various breeds) and equestrian. The fair attracts more and more visitors every year and has long been of interest not only to professionals: farmers, breeders, horse breeders. Golegã National Horse Fair
The history of this horse show goes back a long way. It was first held in the mid-18th century, then under the name Sao Martinho Fair. Since 1972, it has been known as the National Horse Show and takes place annually for 10 days in November in the small Portuguese town of Golego. Its main heroes were and remain horses of the Portuguese Lusitano breed, which are demonstrated here in all their glory in show jumping, dressage and driving, as well as in working equitation. At the end of each exhibition there is traditionally a parade of the best Lusitano stallions. During the exhibition, all the streets of the town are filled with horsemen and horsewomen dressed in traditional Portuguese riding clothes. You can buy it here for yourself, because at every step there are shops with a variety of goods. You may not find white breeches with a full lei here, but you can buy a lot of things that you won't find at standard European horse shows. Since the exhibition occupies almost the entire city, there is no entrance fee.
Qatar
CHI Al Shaqab
In 2014, the luxurious Al Shaqab equestrian center, located in Doha (Qatar), hosted the CHI Al Shaqab international equestrian show for the third time. In addition to five-star (!) dressage and show jumping tournaments with fabulous prize funds, vaulting and distance riding competitions, CHI Al Shaqab hosts one of the largest horse shows in Qatar. Here visitors can find a very wide range of products for horses and equestrian sports.
Entrance to the exhibition is free. A ticket for one competition day for an adult (from 12 years old) costs 8 euros, for a child from 6 to 12 years old - 3.5 euros.

Dubai International Horse Fair
In 2015, the large-scale equestrian exhibition Dubai International Horse Fair will be held for the 11th time in the heart of the UAE, in Dubai. The event is patronized by the Crown Prince of the UAE, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and has firmly established itself as the largest and most prestigious event of its kind in the Middle East.
The horse industry here is a profitable investment; in 2014, more than 8 thousand people from 22 countries visited the exhibition. The exhibition in Dubai continues to grow and develop; in 2013, 208 companies from 35 countries took part in it. This is not just an opportunity to see many horses of various breeds, but also a unique chance to get expert advice on the characteristics of Italian-bred horses, as well as attend seminars by foreign professionals, where you can gain in-depth knowledge about the achievements of national horse breeding associations. In addition, within the framework of the exhibition, competitions are held from year to year high level, where top riders demonstrate their class in reining and dressage. The Roma Cavalli exhibition is full of entertainment programs and shows that can be visited without extra expenses - their cost is included in the entrance ticket to the exhibition.

The Horfa International Horse Show, held annually in Shanghai, is not only the largest event of its kind in China, but also an event that attracts many guests from abroad. Horse breedings of various breeds, horse auctions, conferences and seminars, theatrical horse shows and, of course, a large exhibition-fair of ammunition, equipment for riders, veterinary drugs and many other goods take place here. In addition, various events are always held here.

In addition to the fair, daily horse breedings of various breeds took place as part of the exhibition, as well as an equestrian show program, the highlight of which was the performance of the Andalusians.
World horse show calendar
From September 8 to 10, the 3rd International Exhibition “Equestrian Russia” will be held on the territory of the Maxima Park country complex.
For the first time in our country, a joint project is being implemented, in which the largest equestrian club participates European level and professional organizers of horse shows. This partnership provides new opportunities to create a real equestrian festival that brings together industry professionals and all horse lovers.
Over the course of three days, more than 500 horses of domestic and foreign breeds will take part in breed broods and shows, as well as in international show jumping competitions. Horses from all over Russia will come to Maxima Park near Moscow - Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, Samara, Kaluga, Leningrad, Tver, Nizhny Novgorod, Kirov, Rostov, Chelyabinsk, Saratov region, the republics of Mordovia, Adygea and Dagestan, as well as some European countries and states of the former CIS - Belarus, Estonia, Lithuania.
Specialists from Holland, Italy, the USA, Belgium, Argentina, and Qatar will conduct seminars and master classes and take part in refereeing the championships.
Every day in the Grand Manege you can see a show parade of horses of various breeds, including Andalusian, Friesian, Norwegian Fjord and others. A real highlight will be the performance of the smallest horse in Russia - the American miniature stallion Guliver (height at withers 45 cm, weight 7 kg) and the largest horse in our country - Shire Jedi (height 197 cm and weighing more than 1 ton).
The first day of the exhibition will open with a litter of the Terek horse breed, which has almost disappeared in our time. Next, the program will be devoted to non-Olympic disciplines of equestrian sports. Leonid Shevchenko will hold a master class on driving, he will demonstrate the legendary Russian troika and different types European harnesses. As part of the “Horse Sense” project, Ulyana Yakovleva and her charming Tinker mare Cinderella will present the “10 Commandments of Horse Sense. The Russian national vaulting team will show demonstration performances. At the end of the performances, everyone will be able to try to ride a real vaulting horse.
The program of the first day will be completed by the exciting show program “Western VS Classic”, which will clearly demonstrate the difference in the methods of training horses in the Western style and in show jumping, placing a master of sports in the Western saddle international class in show jumping Vladimir Beletsky under the leadership of the director of the Western sports school Natalya Anokhina.
The program of the second day will begin with a master class on classical dressage by the famous Belgian trainer Helen Arianoff, a student of the legendary Portuguese trainer Nuno Oliveira. Next, the arena will be provided to the participants of the breed championships. Participants of the festival of horses of heavy breeds will appear before the audience: Soviet, Russian and Vladimir draft horses, as well as foreign giants - English Shires, Belgian Brabançons and French Percherons. Impartial judging will be provided by Dutch specialist Toon Broijmans.
In the afternoon, as part of the 15th Russian Championship, thoroughbreds will enter the arena Arabian horses. The winners of the ring will receive the right to participate in the World Championships in Paris in December 2017. For the first time, in honor of the anniversary, a class of foals under mares has been approved. Experts from Belgium, Argentina and Qatar were invited to judge.
Sunday will open with a presentation of Oryol horses trotting breed“The Legacy of Count Orlov”, and then there will be a ring of horses of the Don and Budennovsky breeds “Gold of the Steppes”. The program will conclude with an exhibition of thoroughbred horses. Akhal-Teke breed"Russian Cup 2017". The winners of the Cup will go to the FierraCavalli exhibition in Verona (Italy).
For visitors there is an extensive educational program. The list of topics includes the problems of caring for a horse’s hooves and teeth, features of selecting saddles and equipment, issues of feeding and maintenance, as well as lectures and practical classes, including Laura Williams’ seminar on gentle techniques for working with a horse.
In the lobby of the Grand Manege, visitors will be able to get acquainted with the work of equestrian photographers, artists and sculptors. The highlight of the exhibition is the exclusive photo exhibition of the famous animal photographer and blogger Igor Shpilenok “Mustang Island”.
For children, in one of the arenas there will be a petting stable with ponies and miniature horses, competitions will be held there, and pony riding will be organized.
In addition, simultaneously with the exhibition, the CSI-2*1* International Show Jumping Competition and the Russian Amateur Show Jumping Championship will be held at the Maxima Park Olympic Field. Competitions include competitions for children, youth, riders on young horses and amateur athletes, as well as routes at the international 2* level. On Saturday, September 9, spectators will enjoy an exciting Speed and Music route, where riders will have to overcome the route to special music chosen by the organizers. Prize fund competition is 3 million rubles, and the sponsor of the Grand Prix will be the official Ferrari dealer in Russia - Ferrari AVILON.
The fair, traditional for horse exhibitions, will be located on the open and indoor areas of the complex.
