Ski bindings: skating and classic, choice and compatibility. Difference between NNN and SNS ski bindings

Racing standards SNS, NNN, SNS Pilot and NIS - now not only professionals, but also amateurs go to them. Do you personally need them, given your tasks? What are the comparative advantages of SNS, NNN and their modifications SNS Pilot and NIS?

Do you personally need SNS and NNN mounts?

  • Yes, if you improve the style. In this case, you will benefit from good control over the skis and the ability to adjust the stiffness of the boot and ski connection.
  • No, if skiing is not training for you, but a walk, and if you do not go skating. In this case, they have more disadvantages than advantages - durability is less, and boots must be changed before skiing. Choose inexpensive and reliable fasteners Nordic 75.

What is the difference between SNS and NNN?

The mounts of these two standards are similar to each other, like two refrigerators. Consider this a warning: not all stores are competent, and you may be sold, for example, SNS bindings and NNN boots that are incompatible with each other. You can distinguish them by turning the boot towards you with the sole. The SNS boot has a single wide groove running throughout the sole from toe to heel. NNN has two narrower grooves. The mount itself looks like a plastic strip with a longitudinal ridge and a lock in the front. SNS has one crest, NNN has two.

In terms of technical qualities, both systems are approximately equal here. According to reviews, NNN controls the ski a little better, especially when skating. However, in the SNS standard, in addition to the basic version of SNS Profil, there is a “professional” SNS Pilot, which has not one metal bracket on the boot, but two. She is not inferior to NNN.

NNN has a NIS version. In it, there is a mounting plate on the ski, on which the mount is placed, with the ability to adjust back and forth. Pros: no need to drill the ski when mounting the mount; You can very accurately balance the ski along the length. Now SNS is also sold in versions for the NIS mounting plate.

In terms of reliability, in SNS the brace on the boot is located closer to the toe and wears out faster if you walk in boots on asphalt, while in NNN the bindings themselves are more fragile and prone to bumps and chips.

Choice according to the rule "price-convenience"

In fact, neither SNS nor NNNs have a decisive advantage. Both standards are equally popular among the stars skiing. It is much more important to choose the right shoes. The second subtlety: depending on the season and the store, the price of SNS and NNN boots and bindings can vary greatly, and it is important to evaluate the price of the set. That's why:

1. Start by determining the price you are willing to pay for the kit. It may be that NNN bindings are cheaper than SNS and you can fit more "advanced" boots for the same price, or vice versa.

2. Try on all boots of both standards that fit into this price. The most comfortable boots will determine your choice of binding system.

NNN in the online store is a widely demanded model of ski bindings for running by the well-known company ROTTEFELLA from Norway, which has a leading position in the market of sports goods. In our online store you can find fasteners for ski NNN for skiing enthusiasts and professionals alike.

In the front part of the product there are stops made of rubber material, which contribute to the abutment of the toe of the boot during a sharp movement.

Depending on the style of riding, the consumer has the opportunity to choose the stiffness of the rubber. It is she who has a direct impact on the regulation of the rigidity of ski control.

NNN ski bindings have two parallel shoe guides. Boots are fastened with a bracket in the toe area. At the same time, the brace is shifted 1 cm back, practically under the fingers, which improves skating management.

This design of the bindings prevents snow from sticking to the boot during a ski trip, since the risk of lateral displacement of the boot is reduced to zero.

Benefits of NNN mounts

  • Variety of shoes to choose from
  • the possibility of acquiring fastening both manual and automatic
  • a wide range of fasteners regardless of age categories
  • affordable price

As a rule, when purchasing fasteners for the first time, beginners are recommended an automatic type, which is easy to operate.

With the advent of winter, fans of active sports are beginning to reconsider their equipment and uniforms. Someone likes simple and easy trails, so that they can slowly drive down and admire the incredible beauty of nature, capturing the most interesting moments on the camera. Someone, on the contrary, cannot imagine their life without speed and extreme sports. But both one and the other need the right and comfortable equipment. If the suit is responsible for the comfort and coziness of the skier, then the boots need to be chosen more carefully and deliberately. After all, properly selected ski shoes contribute not only to comfortable skiing, but are responsible for human safety.

Today, sporting goods and clothing stores offer their customers a wide range of products from various manufacturers. What ski boots are considered the most suitable for sports lovers? How to choose? What nuances to pay attention to?

Features and Benefits

Ready to go skiing? What needs to be done first? The answer is simple: pick up the equipment. And if novice skiers immediately rush to the choice of skis, studying the incredibly diverse and multifaceted assortment of positions offered in stores, then experienced winter sports enthusiasts focus their attention on the choice of boots. Of course, it is important to be able to choose the right skis, but initially you should choose a boot. After all, comfort, convenience and safety of the feet while skiing are the key characteristics that should be followed when choosing ski boots.

A ski boot is a kind of link between skiers and skis. Today, sporting goods and accessories stores offer their customers a large selection of different models of ski boots, which can be classified according to many criteria: by gender, by size, by style of skiing, by type of skiing, by various technical specifications, by type of fastening, etc.

NNN and SNS

For a good grip between the boot and skis, you need to carefully consider the choice of binding. There are two types of ski boot attachments (now we are not considering outdated options) - these are NNN and SNS. Having studied a lot of information on this issue, we can conclude that both systems are highly professional devices. They should not be compared in terms of which type of attachment is better. Both systems guarantee excellent ski-to-boot grip.

  • NNN- a system that was developed by the Norwegian company Rottefella. The key feature of such a mount is the presence of a pair of parallel clamps, or they are also called stops, against which the toe of the ski boot rests. Four different stiffness options have been developed.

  • SNS– system for fastening with cross-country skis. It has three degrees of hardness. Developed by the French company Salomon. Feature - the boot rests on one central latch.

These systems are not interchangeable. Accordingly, when choosing a pair of shoes, a person should be guided solely by their preferences, requirements and wishes.

fashion models

Ski boot companies offer modern day skiers active rest wide and varied selection of shoes. If you think that the key classification provides for a distinction exclusively between male, female and children's models, then such a conclusion is completely wrong.

There are two main directions according to which all ski boots can be divided into groups:

According to riding style:

  • for skating;
  • for a traditional style or for a combined move;
  • universal model.

According to the intended purpose:

materials

We are all used to the fact that the most practical and high-quality shoes are necessarily made of genuine leather. But this rule does not apply to ski boots. Of course, if you wish, you can find models that are made of genuine leather, but such products are not worth buying. First, they are overpriced. And secondly, as you know, the skin tends to slightly deform and stretch, which is categorically unacceptable in ski-type boots.

All well-known brands engaged in the production and sale sportswear and shoes, they use exclusively artificial leather (leatherette), which is covered with special impregnations on top (to repel moisture, for greater density, with a special layer of insulation). However, don't skimp on ski boots. As the saying goes, a miser pays twice. If you have purchased cheap fake boots of a well-known brand, then do not expect any extraordinary miracle from them.

How to choose

Properly selected ski boots guarantee comfortable and enjoyable skiing. At the same time, they securely fix the skier's leg, thereby preventing the possibility of injury, for example, when falling. It is necessary to choose skis only when you have already purchased or decided on the model of boots.

Criteria for choosing ski boots:

  • Size. The inside of the boot must match the size of the foot. In no case do not take wide or long models, as they will not be able to tightly fix the foot of the foot. The boot can be butted, over time, the inner filler settles a little and takes the shape of the foot.

To choose the right size, you can resort to easy way: take a piece of paper, put your foot and circle with a pen. We cut out the "imprint" and together with it we go to the store, where a good assortment of ski boots is offered.

Skis today are produced for a wide variety of purposes - for beginners and experienced athletes, for running or mountains.

Accordingly, the models differ in the materials from which they are made, in length and width, and necessarily in the types of fasteners.

Since the choice of ski shoes depends on the selected bindings, and sometimes even special design solutions are required in the arrangement of the skis themselves, the issue with them should be addressed first.

Retro style mounts

Considered obsolete, but mounts known as NN-75. These are the devices that the parents of today's athletes used to call tough.

They consist of a plate with pins and a clamping bracket. Boots for such bindings must have appropriate holes in the sole.

Such mounts are very cheap, but are gradually being replaced by other designs.

It is claimed that they do not allow the use of skating (although non-professional Soviet skiers somehow managed to do this). But the fact is that this system leaves the heel unfixed.

Modern Fashion - SNS and NNN

The most common types of cross-country ski bindings today are called SNS And NNN. Each of them requires a special type of shoe, there is no compatibility between them (although it is possible within the same group of bindings).

Both of these systems are distinguished by the presence of peculiar guides instead of pins (in the first case - one, in the second - two), which securely fix the foot with the help of similar grooves in the sole of the boots.

Both types of fastening are distinguished by rigidity. It is determined by the indicators of the rubber bands against which the boot rests during the push. They can be distinguished by color or applied numerical marking. Mounts SNS for skating they are sometimes released with special springs instead of rubber bands.

System NNN however, it differs closer to the foot (almost under the fingers) by the location of the fixing spring, which also facilitates the movement of the “skate”.

In both of these types there are varieties that fasten automatically and require manual work. Experienced athletes usually choose SNS with manual fastening (they are more reliable), and beginners - NNN with automation (they are cheaper). These types of bindings are suitable for any shoe size.

Technical novelty NIS

Another type of ski binding for cross-country skis appeared in 2005. Its designation is NIS. The difference here is not in the principle of fixing the boot, but in the approach to the idea of installing the ski bindings themselves.

They can be fastened without screws, very quickly, and also moved along the ski. There is only one problem - only skis are suitable for this, on which the appropriate platform has already been installed in the factory.

In this case, special shoes are not needed - boots with a standard sole will do.

If the athlete intends to take only the first steps on skis, it is better for him to purchase the first equipment in accordance with the recommendations of a professional consultant.

And there is no need to strive to immediately buy all the most expensive - such equipment is intended for professionals, and completely different models and designs are suitable for beginners.

Fastening videos

SNS and NNN systems. Why only these two systems: everything is simple - they are the most common on this moment(everything else is a thing of the past - NN 75 mm bindings (for boots with three holes that may gather dust on your balconies) are already less practical and not so convenient, they do not fix the boot well relative to the plane of the ski).

I must say right away that both binding systems have many models that are designed for beginner skiers (amateurs) and for professionals. World-class athletes perform on both bindings, everyone chooses for themselves.

I'll start with the SNS mounting system. Developed by Salomon. Tourist (walking) options, as a rule, are automatic (with automatic fastening, you only need to insert the boot into the mount) and are suitable for a combined style of riding - classic or skate. Flexor (elastic band) of medium hardness. Their disadvantages are heavier and sometimes freeze at low temperatures.

The next step will be SNS PROFIL EQUIPE bindings (classic or skate). The only difference is in the flexors (rubbers). For skate style rides are tougher. Suitable for both amateurs and athletes of a higher level. These bindings will give you better control over the ski.

One level up are the SNS PILOT EQUIPE mounts (classic or skate). Pros: Better geometry, lighter weight, great ski control. Many professional skiers choose this model. Additionally, a WEDGE plate is installed between this binding and the ski, which raises the front of the boot by 5 millimeters, which, according to Salomon research, increases the repulsion phase and roll on the ski. There are two types: narrow and wide, your choice.

Salomon's top model is the SNS PILOT CARBON RC (RC2) ski bindings released in 2015. Not only have the manufacturers reduced the weight and retained great control over the ski, they have also incorporated a wedge plate that improves roll stability and kick-off range. The cost is much higher than previous models, but it's worth it.

All Salomon bindings are mounted on skis with screws.

Now I will talk about the NNN system. Developed by ROTTEFELLA. Just like with SNS, amateur, recreational (for beginner skiers) options will be mounts - automatic machines, for example: step-in, costing about 1000 rubles. Mounted on skis with screws.

The next in the NNN line are ROTTEFELLA R3 bindings, which are also installed with screws, but they were discontinued in 2015, hence we conclude that the entire NNN line (not including amateur ones) comes with a screwless installation system (bindings are installed on pre-installed on skis NIS platform using a special key). Approximately in the same price category with R3 there are two models of mounts:

Xcelerator Junior and Exercise (There are skate and classic). The first ones are perfect for athletes of different levels of training with a foot size of no more than 42, because. the length of the guide platform will no longer allow - it is one-piece. The second is for amateur athletes, of an average level of training, who do not strive to achieve the highest results.

The ROTTEFELLA XCELERATOR bindings (Skate and Classic) became the top step in the evolution. For athletes who are serious about sports. Their light weight and practicality make them the pinnacle of the NNN range. In addition to the skating version, they put the XCELERATOR SKATE SPACER platform (similar to Salomon's WEDGE plate), which raises the toe of the binding, thereby improving stability and repulsion. It is also attached to the NIS platform with a key and the mounts themselves are installed on top of it.

Or you can choose the mounting option with an already built-in platform - ROTTEFELLA XCELERATOR SSR

Summarize. When choosing bindings, look at your skis, now most manufacturers are already embedding the NIS platform on skis (FISCHER, MADSHUS, ROSSIGNOL). In this case, I recommend installing the NNN system mounts, because. they are easy to remove and put on (can be used without problems in the summer on roller skis). If you have skis without a plate (for example, it is not on SALOMON, ATOMIC, YOKO, JARVINEN, SKI TRAB), then Salomon bindings are perfect, or you can put amateur Rottefella step-in.

I have tried both systems over many years of training. In my opinion, the Salomon Pilot bindings have much better grip between the boot and the ski, due to two axles, and, accordingly, controllability at a height. The choice is yours. Below is a photo of skis with and without the NIS platform.
