Dagestan coach will help Dominican wrestlers

Honored coach of Russia Esedullah Shakhmardanov went to the Dominican Republic at the invitation of the local wrestling federation.

Prior to this, the 65-year-old specialist from Makhachkala worked in Colombia for three Olympic cycles. This time he signed a short-term contract that will last until mid-October.

"I was offered to stay for a longer period, but I'm not old enough to leave for a long time," Esedullah Shakhmardanov said in a telephone conversation with a wrestdag.ru correspondent.

"My task is to help Dominican freestyle wrestlers prepare for the Pan American Games and the World Championship. I work in the capital of Santo Domingo. They put me in a hotel near the Olympic center, where I train the national team. There are about 20 guys in the team. There are physically gifted, but everyone has big problems with technology.

Unlike our collections, in which wrestling is in the first place, Dominicans give priority to studying. Almost all of them study and regularly attend classes every day. This also creates certain difficulties.

In the Dominican Republic, everyone is crazy about baseball, and wrestling is not popular here, moreover, this country is one of the most backward countries on the continent in our martial arts.

The President of the National Wrestling Federation wants to somehow change the situation, supports the guys morally and financially, always goes to competitions with them, worries about them.

He, of course, counts on me, but at the same time he understands that in a short time it will be difficult for me to prepare wrestlers who could show results in continental competitions, not to mention the world championship.

But in these few months, I have to give something to the Dominican wrestlers, teach them something, and at the same time train local coaches. I hope I succeed, that's why I came here."

For many years, Albert Selimov was the star of the Russian team, but at the Olympics in Rio he will enter the ring under the flag of Azerbaijan. In an interview with the portal "Moscow-Baku" he talks about his new life in the Baku club "Baku Fires" ("Lights of Baku").

Albert, this is a brilliant acquisition for Azerbaijan, but how did it happen that Russia refused such a boxer? How easy was it for you to make the decision to change teams?

It was very difficult. Until now, there was a wound on the heart, as if it had to be cut to the living. Probably, my heart will remain divided into two halves, and one of them will always belong to Russia, no matter what happens ...

- Something must have happened?

It happened, of course it happened. Now the emotions have already subsided, at the World Championships we met both with the guys and with the officials from the federation. We greeted, we had a good conversation. I don't have any problems with guys. As with the coach of the Russian national team, Olympic champion and a wonderful person Alexander Borisovich Lebzyak. It's just that at some point I was not needed in Russia.

- How are you not needed? Vice world champion, one of the main favorites of the future Olympics is not needed?

It's just that my whole life is endless ups and downs ... At the recent World Championships in Qatar, I received silver, and I could have won gold, if not for a cut above the eyebrow.

Four years ago, a similar story cost me a trip to the London Olympics. I had two unfortunate fights at that time. In one of them, a Venezuelan with the same incomprehensible surname as himself did not behave like a man, but like ... I don’t want to offend anyone, but what can you say about a person if you don’t even hit him, but he falls? If you're going to the ring, then be a man, fight! And with his behavior, he lured indulgence from the judges, and in that fight I did not get an Olympic license.

The next fight in which I could get a license - and here is the same ill-fated cut as in Qatar. I was in great shape, but I didn't make it to the Olympics! I felt bad then, I really wanted to finish boxing. I asked to go to Azerbaijan for half a year, to box in the BakuFires club, to recover a little from these shocks ... And then it turned out that no one was waiting for me back in the Russian national team. I was very hurt, but I don't want to talk about it. I can only say one thing: it was not my decision.

The Azerbaijani brothers welcomed me so warmly, little by little I began to come to my senses, but I continued to feel that something was wrong with me. In general, I box differently than others, I have my own characteristics. And now all this is lost. I even told the president of BakuFires, who treats me very well, "If I can't be the same, break up with me!"

I said these words before going against a very strong Ukrainian - Vasyl Lomachenko, the number one in the world rankings. And a miracle happened. I revived. Apparently, a powerful opponent simply motivated me, and I again began to show my real boxing. So I stayed. And then he accepted the offer to play for the Azerbaijani national team.

- And what if at the Olympics in Rio you have to fight with one of the Russian boxers?

I wouldn't want that at all. All the guys from the Russian team remain my friends. Is it true! Yes, this is a very heavy feeling: we saw each other at the World Championships, seemed to embrace from the heart, asked each other about everything. But at the same time, one feels: something is no longer the same, not the same as before ...

- Now you are rivals.

It is not easy. Therefore, if we have to go to one ring at the Olympics, let it happen in the final!

- It will be especially insulting to lose to them in the final.

Everything is the will of the Almighty. I fought at one Olympics, didn't make it to the second, now I'm waiting for the third, but the Olympics - I came to this conclusion a long time ago - is a separate planet. Everything is different there, not at all the same as always. And the strong can lose, and the weak can win. How will the Almighty.

- Do you pray before entering the ring?

Necessarily. I perform namaz, ablution, and observe Ramadan five times a day. Sometimes, if for some reason I am unable to pray, I immediately begin to feel a certain heaviness, like a stone in my soul.

My life, as I said, has never been smooth. I'm almost used to this endless change of white and black stripes. I understand this in such a way that the Almighty is testing me, he is testing each of us, and I am grateful to him for these tests. If you endure, they send you good luck. In general, I became much calmer thanks to religion. I used to get angry during a fight for a blow to the back of the head, or some other bad thing, and there were times, especially in my youth, when after a fight... How should I put it.... So, I went to talk with my opponent. So to speak, "finish the meeting."

- And now?

Now I'm embarrassed to remember all this. But once it was filmed on a video camera, I was almost disqualified, or rather, I would have been disqualified if the coach of the Russian national team Nikolai Dmitrievich Khromov had not stood up for me. I felt like a hero of some movie, and now I can only wonder: “Is it really me on the very video that was sent to the International Boxing Federation ?!”. Thanks to Nikolai Dmitrievich that he understood: I'm just young and too hot, and vouched for me. Many good things are remembered about Russia. I'm sorry we had to leave like this.

- What will you do after Rio?

Whether I win the Olympics or lose, it will be mine. recent fights. I spent 20 years in the ring, now I want a different life. Which? There is one dream. Thanks to business, feel confident in financial terms, and then find a few boys - "partisans" of such little fanatics with burning eyes, as I once was. And help them, pay for training, fees, trips to competitions. Do I not know how important such support is for boys from ordinary families! I can easily choose them. I'll go to any sports school. I'll watch the kids workout. After all, it is enough to look into the eyes, everything is reflected in the eyes. And the eyes of someone who loves boxing more than life, I recognize immediately ...
