Over the past decade, the professional boxing ring has seen a plethora of flamboyant and beloved champions born in the Philippines. One of these outstanding fighters is Nonito Donaire - a famous athlete who managed to win and defend several titles many times. We will talk about it in more detail in the article.

basic information

Nonito Doner was born on November 16, 1982 in a city little known to the general public called Tagbilaran, located in the Philippine Islands. The athlete's height is 168 centimeters, and the arm span is 173 centimeters. The fighter is nicknamed "Philippine Flash". The boxer currently resides in San Leandro, California, United States of America.

Amateur career

Nonito Donaire entered the square of the amateur ring 76 times and emerged victorious 68 times. In 1998, he managed to become the silver medalist of the championship of his homeland in the division up to 90 pounds.

A year later, the athlete took first place in the youth Olympic Games. At that tournament, he was able to defeat Manuel Perez, Date Nguyen and James Kirkland.

Turning pro

The professional debut of the boxer took place in early 2001. During the first few years of his career, he fought in several categories from 41 to 55 kilograms. The results of his fights were overwhelmingly positive for him, with the exception of only the second fight, in which he unexpectedly lost to an almost unknown opponent named Rosendo Sanchez.

First titles

Already in the fifth fight, Nonito Doner was able to win the title of Asian champion according to the WBO version, but the belt itself was not awarded to the fighter. In 2005, the athlete defeated a very serious opponent in the face of Colombian Ilido Julio. And a year later, the Filipino defeated Karen Harutyunyan by a separate decision and took away the belt of the champion of North America in the second flyweight division from him.

Sensational result

On July 7, 2007, Nonito dropped down one category to meet the current IBF world champion Darchinyan. Even before the fight, the Armenian behaved very arrogantly when he spoke extremely impartially about the applicant on his official website, indicating that he would definitely knock out Donaire. However, the result of the fight shocked all the fans very much and received the status of “upset of the year”, and all because in the fifth round the Filipino literally destroyed Vakhtang with a blow to the jaw. The Armenian tried to rise to his feet and continue the fight, but his eyes and the flowing blood from his nose signaled that the championship was irrevocably over.

Title defense

In late 2007, Nonito Donaire fought WBC mandatory contender Luis Maldonado. The whole fight was dictated by the Filipino, and at the end of the seventh round he was completely able to knock down the Mexican, but he managed to quickly get on the 4th score. The denouement of the fight took place in the 8th round, when the champion literally brought down a hail of crazy blows on the challenger and scored him to a technical knockout.

Promotion to the bantamweight division

At the end of 2010, Donaire publicly declassified ex-world champion Vladimir Sidorenko. The fight lasted 4 rounds. Throughout the fight, the Filipino had an undeniable advantage, which eventually transformed into a technical knockout of the Ukrainian.

Literally two months later, Nonito had an important championship fight for himself with the owner of the WBC and WBO belts, Fernando Motiel. Already in the second three minutes, the Mexican was knocked out. This fight received the title of "knockout of the year" according to the experts of the magazine "Ring".

Bantamweight career

The results of Donaire's fights in this category were also good for him, before meeting with the Cuban. But before that there were two significant victories. First, Vasquez Jr. was defeated in a very tense fight, thanks to which the Filipino received the WBO champion belt. And then there was a triumph over Jeffrey Mathebula, who at that time owned the IBF belt.

Hurtful loss

In April 2013, Nonito met in the ring with Rigondeaux. In that fight, several belts were at stake at once: WBO, WBA, The Ring. Despite all the predictions of respected experts and the public, the fight did not end in favor of the Filipino. And this despite the fact that the Cuban was knocked down in the eleventh round during the fight. Nevertheless, after all the allotted 12 three-minute fights, the judges gave the victory to Guillermo.

Continuing a career

After the defeat of Rigondeaux, Donaire won two fights and lost again, but to the Jamaican Nicholas Walters. Moreover, this defeat was early, which was an even greater surprise. Then the Filipino gave out a series of four victories, after which he lost again. His offender was the American Jesse Magdaleno.

On September 23, 2017, Nonito, whose weight in boxing always fluctuated between different categories, triumphantly returned to the ring. In a tough fight, he was able to defeat the Mexican Ruben Garcia Hernandez and thereby won the vacant WBC Silver title. To do this, Donaire needed to go through all 10 rounds.
