In this article I want to make an overview of what the modern qigong. What theories and methods influenced its development.

This article is also no exception, so the topic of the so-called “sectarian qigong” or “new age style qigong” will not be touched upon here - where methods like: “we all join hands, say the sacred syllable Om!, imagine a hot elephant and attract cosmic energy into our chakras." Such methods, despite the presence of the word "qigong" in their names, as well as their popularity - both in the Western world and in China itself - in my understanding, have nothing to do with qigong.

So, when a person tells you that he is practicing qigong, it will be very difficult for you to imagine what exactly he is doing. It can look like anything because the term "qigong" hides many methods and theories, which can be mixed with each other and have various forms of practical implementation. I wrote about this a bit in the article "What is Qigong". Let's describe these theories and methods that form the building blocks of qigong.

Daoyin Methods

This is one of the most ancient layers of qigong. It is so multifaceted and diverse that it requires separate consideration. These could be both simple gymnastic movements, and actions that combine work with breathing, which is often singled out in a separate direction and performed without movement.

Most movements daoyin (leading and engaging) known today are not very complex, some are used with objects (ball, stick, etc.). Some techniques are performed exclusively in a sitting position, which may indicate their initially auxiliary function: restorative gymnastics after or during breaks in meditative practices.

Since some of the techniques that have come down to our time have deep roots, the following phenomena are observed in connection with this. There can be many variations of the same techniques, often with significant differences from each other. Often - passing through hundreds or even thousands of years - methods lost and acquired a new inner understanding. Today, many people practicing qigong simply move their hands, sometimes following the correspondence of inhalation and exhalation with the movement. It is likely that the "inner meaning" of such exercises is simply lost, but with the same probability it could never exist.

Often the methods were completely lost and re-created anew, starting from the theory that was fixed in the treatises.

Some methods have changed so much that they have become something completely different. For example, « Five Animal Games» that were once invented by a legendary physician Hua To(perhaps by his followers) on the basis of imitation of wild animals and the theory of "Running Water".

What was the original method Hua To- in general, it is difficult to say, since there are no descriptions of the movements themselves. It is only known that during classes sweat stood out strongly - so that the body had to be sprinkled with powder, an animal appetite appeared and “ the body became light, and joy arose". We meet the first descriptions only 300 years after the alleged creation. Judging by these descriptions, during practice, a person closely imitated the movements of animals. Here are some excerpts:

"Tiger. Four limbs are torn off the ground, perform three jumps forward and three back ...
Deer. Four limbs lift off the ground, stretch their necks and look back...
Bear. ... They push off the ground with their hands to the right and left of the body.
Monkey. ... They grab the object with their feet and hang. ”

It looks like the movements are performed on all fours, some actions are similar to modern gymnastic exercises on the horizontal bar. Such methods trained the body and carried a fairly powerful load on the muscles and ligaments.

Today, a technique called "Five Animal Games" absolutely devoid of load and is performed mainly on almost straight legs. Below is an example of a modern implementation of these techniques (powder is not needed):

Out wide renowned technicians daoyin with ancient roots can be called: « Eight pieces of brocade» And « Twelve pieces of brocade» .

Nowadays, many complexes of movements are being created according to the principles daoyin, some are trying to restore ancient methods from pictures and descriptions in order to give them a second life. For example, movements from Mawangdui.

There are those who come up with their own methods. For example, the well-known complex "Wild goose". It does not require excessive physical effort and does not carry a burden on thinking. Just a light workout. Look at the video:

Since my fingers are tired of typing letters, I interrupt my review until the next article, which will focus on theoretical postulates of daoyin.

There is an expression in China: “Qi is the cause of a hundred diseases, and blood stasis is the starting point of these diseases” . It is not difficult to understand this expression - for one reason or another, a clamped qi is formed in our body. Given the close relationship and interdependence of qi and blood, the blocked energy forms blood stagnation in different parts of the body, which become more and more over time.

These stagnations are manifested by many negative symptoms and diseases. Our wise body has a powerful self-healing system, but the stagnation of qi and blood prevents it from starting its mechanism.

According to the logic of things, it is enough to restore the movement of qi and blood so that diseases have nowhere to gain a foothold.

Let's use an analogy. Imagine the movement of a winding stream, the waters of which are crystal clear and transparent. He easily and boldly paves his way. Its unhindered movement attracts living organisms of all shapes and sizes.

But what happens if we build a dam in the way of a stream? Over time, this once “living creature” will turn into a dead swamp, into a “hot spot of inflammation” on the body of the Earth.

It is the same in our body: pain, discomfort, fatigue, inflammation, negative symptoms and diseases are all pockets of qi and blood trapped in certain places.

Our task is not to fight painful symptoms, because if the cause is not eliminated, they will return again and again, but to get rid of the root of the troubles that have settled in the body, in other words, to demolish the dam that interferes with the active movement of qi and blood.

You will get the most optimal effect if you perform a complex of seven to eight exercises at a time. But the fact is that each exercise individually is completely self-sufficient and can bring you great benefits.
