Developer: Grigorovich
Country Russia
First flight: 1915

During the summer and autumn of 1914, several flights were made on the M-2 flying boat, which showed that further work was required to improve the aircraft layout. The next flying boat M-3 was not entirely successful either. In essence, this is a somewhat modified M-2 with a more powerful 100 hp Gnome Monosoupape engine. The hull of the boat remained the same, but the profile of the wings was changed once again. Test flights showed that even with the new layout, the seaplane's flight data, compared to the M-2, did not improve. The seaworthiness of the boat also remained unsatisfactory. Grigorovich's next boat, the M-4, did not shine with its data, in fact, a modified version of the M-3, with the same engine. They only changed the wing profile and slightly modernized the hull of the boat, and the stabilizer was made with a screw lift, which made it possible to change the angle of its installation in flight. It should be noted here that the difficulty of designing seaplanes lies in the fact that, in addition to the aerodynamic qualities inherent in any aircraft, a seaplane must also have specific properties: buoyancy, stability, unsinkability and seaworthiness. From M-1 to M-5, the aircraft designer had to literally touch the optimal variant of the designed aircraft. This is the special merit of Dmitry Grigorovich and his great success in creating an outstanding model of the M-5 flying boat for that time, which went down in the history of domestic and world aviation.

The double flying boat M-5 was released in the spring of 1915, and already on April 12 it made its first sortie. In the future, until 1923, the boat was built in series. In total, about 300 aircraft of this type were produced. Grigorovich managed to optimally combine the high seaworthiness of the boat hull with the excellent flight data of the aircraft in the M-5. A runway for the apparatus could be a water surface with a wave height of up to 0.5 m. The carefully profiled bottom of the boat did not “stick” to the water and was easily separated from it during takeoff. Landing speed was only 70 km / h. Double flying boat M-5 with a 100 hp Gnome Monosoupape engine. developed a maximum speed near the ground of 105 km / h. Practical ceiling - 3300 m, flight duration - 4 hours. The geometric data are as follows: the length of the aircraft is 8.6 m, the wingspan is 13.62 m, and the area of the wings is 37.9 m2. The takeoff weight of the aircraft is 960 kg, the payload is 300 kg. M-5 remained in service for a long time: first as a naval reconnaissance aircraft, and since 1916 as a training vehicle.

What improvements did the designer apply in this aircraft compared to previous models? First of all, the area of the lower wing has been increased. The redan of the boat remained concave, but its height was reduced in the center - up to 70 mm, and along the sides - up to 140 mm. The cheekbones on the redan are equipped with skids, with the help of which the seaplane could get out of the water to the descent site. M-5 had good seaworthiness, was light and easy to manage. There were no weapons on the M-5 scout. In rare cases, a machine gun was installed in front of the right seat. The design of the M-5 hull is typical for other Grigorovich seaplanes. The frame of the boat was made of ash, sheathing - plywood, with a thickness of 3 mm along the sides, and on the deck up to 5-6 mm. Redan on the bottom of the bill of 10 mm plywood. Sometimes, for the strength of the hull, the thickness of the skin in the middle part reached 5 mm.

The assembly of the case was carried out on brass screws and coated with lead or zinc white. Plywood strips on copper rivets were placed at the joints of the hull skin. Some seams and joints of plywood were upholstered on the outside with copper foil and soldered with tin. Outside, the hull of the boat was covered with a colorless varnish, inside - drying oil. The power set of the boat's hull consisted of frames, and diagonal braces were placed in places, the transverse and longitudinal set were connected with clamps made of 3 mm plywood. In addition, a special “sea glue” and a special solution of cottage cheese in ammonia were used during assembly, which increased the hydroresistance of the glued joints. The wooden parts were fastened with screws, it took up to 15 thousand of them for the entire hull of the boat. All work was done by hand.

The design of the wings is two-spar, braced, very thin profile - about 4% of the wing chord. The upper and lower wings are connected crosswise with metal braces and, in addition, such braces connected the wings to the bow of the boat.

The rudder and aileron control cables are routed outside the boat and wings. The tail unit, located above the curved tail of the boat on racks of metal pipes, was very light and not rigid: the “tail” twisted noticeably on a turn, trembled from blowing with a propeller, but never broke.

The stabilizer is wooden, with struts for the rear spar, also connected by metal braces to the keel. The angle of installation of the stabilizer could be changed before the flight. The rudders and keel are welded from thin-walled steel pipes with several wooden ribs and covered with fabric.

The star-shaped air-cooled engine was mounted on the central pillars of the wing box on a sheet frame with additional support under the engine toe. Gasoline was supplied to the engine under pressure from the tank due to the excess air pressure created using hand pump. The fuel tank itself was located behind the cockpit.

The M-5 flying boat is a well-thought-out harmonious design with a successful aerodynamic profile and sufficient wing area, which ensured good flight data for the machine. The successful combination of the power plant with the size and weight of the aircraft provided simple and safe control in the air. The boat provided a sufficient margin of safety during normal operation and made it easy to take off from the water during takeoff, and had taxiing stability. Such qualities of the aircraft were the best suited for a training aircraft. However, the flight performance of the M-5 remained still low, the maximum speed - just over 100 km / h - is clearly insufficient for a combat vehicle.

Nevertheless, I would like to note once again that the layout of the aircraft and the successful combination of all structural elements with the placement of the power plant put the M-5 flying boat among the outstanding creations of its time. Interestingly, Grigorovich repeatedly tried to improve the flight performance of the M-5 by installing a more powerful engine, but this only backfired...

Which boat to choose for fishing and hunting

First, find out for what purposes you need it, how much water you will plow on your new vessel, how many people you will transport, how transportation will be carried out to the place of fishing or hunting and back.

For smaller waters, a rowboat is the way to go. If you need to buy a unit for large lakes, rivers, or if you like to ride with the breeze, get a motor-rowing boat.

The main parameters to be followed when choosing a PVC inflatable boat:

Size and weight- you can buy an inflatable boat made of polyvinyl chloride of different weight categories and dimensions:
- weight - 7-125 kg. Please note that in all technical specifications the weight is indicated without taking into account the floorboard, oars, etc. The weight depends on the dimensions of the vessel and the materials from which it is made. A well-known fact is that PVC boats (light and practical, the color does not fade, they are highly resistant to ultraviolet radiation) are much lighter than rubber samples. When choosing heavy boats, do not forget to measure your strength when moving the vessel;

Width (100-240 cm) and length (190-555 cm)- the longer the vessel, the better the downforce and the faster the speed to the glider. Usually single boats have a length of up to 3 m. Even if the manufacturer indicates that up to 4 people can fit on such vessels, one fisherman will be comfortable in it, taking into account the equipment. If manufacturers indicate that with a length of 3-4 meters it will fit 6 people, then in practice comfort is provided to 3 passengers. Inflatable boats over 4 meters are heavy, require the installation of outboard motors from 30 hp.

bottom type- in our store there is a large catalog of boats with "soft (inflatable)" and "hard" bottom.

Inflatable bottom - the main advantages: quick assembly (you can inflate it in 10 minutes), you can stand on it, it is easy to transport, it increases the speed of getting on the glider. Cons - a little soft, still prone to punctures with sharp objects.

- "hard" bottom - the main advantages: less "traumatic", strong, it is very convenient to stand on it, a vessel with such a bottom has rigidity in motion. Cons - the laying time of the bottom is at least 30 minutes, greater weight and dimensions.

Passenger capacity- we sell PVC inflatable boats for one person and groups of people up to 10 people.

The maximum power of the outboard motor- in our official online store you can buy an inflatable boat with a maximum allowable motor power from 2.5 to 50 hp:

Length 2.0-2.7 m - for 2.5-3.5 hp outboard motors

Length 2.7-3 m - for 3.5-6 hp outboard motors

Length 3 m. and longer- for 5-40 hp outboard motors.

PVC boats have a lot of options to choose from. Remember that the most important thing when choosing is safety - you must not allow the boat to be lifted onto the "cobra", and, as a result, the captain, passengers and outboard motor will be overboard.

The novelty of the 2012 season is the two-seater rowing boat Fregat M-5 is the most spacious inflatable boat in its class with a mount for a mounted transom to install a boat motor up to 4 hp. inclusive and intended for fishing, hunting and recreation on small reservoirs.

Due to the material, the boat is suitable for use in various conditions - in quiet enclosed waters, on a wave or on rapids of shallow rivers, among snags and reeds.

2. Welded seams of the Frigate M-5 boat are made using hot air welding technology, which guarantees increased strength and durability of the seams, as well as reliability and safety on the water for passengers compared to glued seams.

3. The boat consists of one closed cylinder, divided by partitions into 2 compartments, while the partitions are under the swivel oarlocks, so even if one of the compartments is damaged, it remains possible to work with oars, and most importantly to ensure your safety, the boat remains afloat.

4. Cast holders are installed along the sides inside the hull, in which the seats for passengers are rigidly fixed, which prevents them from jumping out and moving. Stationary banks are a guarantee of your safety on the move: the banks will not jump out of the grooves, and at the same time the ideal weight of the boat is maintained.

5. Rowing boat Frigate M-5 has smooth contours and is designed with a raised bow, which allows it to have excellent wave survivability and easy oaring at high speed, and also prevents the boat's cockpit from being splashed by waves.

6. The oars of the rowing boat Frigate M-5 are equipped with adjustable clamps, which makes it possible to comfortably control the boat for people of different heights. Lightweight collapsible aluminum oars with plastic blades always stay afloat.
