I have a terrible memory for numbers. So much so that even after 12 years of practice I manage to confuse Virabhadrasana 1 and Virabhadrasana 2. The teacher was terribly delighted and thanked for a long time for the kind words, at the same time they agreed to meet soon and discuss the pressing issues of educating some primary school students.

And then came a text message from a close yoga friend. She wrote: "Happy birthday!". And now this is somehow alarming already .... After all, I was born in April, and today is December 14 .... Isn't it just that I have a problem with my head? I looked into the saving Internet and found that teachers' day is celebrated on October 5th. Oops… I can only imagine what the cool girl thought of me! And most importantly, she did not raise an eyebrow, accepting my congratulations with a bang.

And then I went to Facebook. And the first thing that caught my eye on the tape was a large photograph of Iyengar. How could I forget! It really is Teacher's Day today! And what! My day, our Teacher's day. Teacher's Day for all who practice Iyengar yoga!

On December 14, 1918, Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar was born - a man who was destined to go a long way from a dying boy to a world-renowned Master of Yoga. A person whose biography is full of amazing events worthy of embodiment in literature and on the movie screen, and whose path in yoga is a true example for millions to follow. Guruji, as his students respectfully call him, is 93 years old today.

Everyone who is involved in the Iyengar yoga tradition celebrates this day in different ways. Festive classes in honor of Guruji are held at the Narayana Center and the Yoga Studio on Stary Arbat. Yulia Novikova, an artist and yoga teacher, is now baking vegan cookies in the form of asanas and is going to treat her “rug friends” with them. And those who are lucky and they ended up in Pune in December of this year can congratulate the Teacher personally.
