In the final, Canadian hockey players were stronger than rivals from the European team

Canadian Sidney Crosby with the World Cup

Moscow. September 30th. site - The Canadian national hockey team won the World Cup for the second time.

In the second match of the final series of the 2016 World Cup before two victories, Canadian hockey players defeated the European team - 2:1 (0:1, 0:0, 2:0). The hosts of the tournament conceded a goal in the first period and could not recoup for a long time. The key segment of the match was the 58th minute, when Patrice Bergeron converted the numerical advantage. And 36 seconds before the end of the third period, already in the minority, the Canadian team pulled out a victory: the puck was thrown by Brad Marchand.

The path of the finalists

At the group stage, the Canadian team won all three victories, alternately taking over the Czech Republic (6:0), the USA (4:2) and the same Europe (4:1). This allowed her to score 6 points (2 points were awarded for the victory in this tournament) and finish in first place in group A. According to the tournament layout, the Russian team, which became the second in group B, became the rival of the hosts of the World Cup in the semifinals. During the meeting, the Canadians first led in the long run, then allowed the Russians not only to recoup, but also to take the lead. However, the final advantage was still on the side of the Canadian team - 5:3.

Thus, the Canadian team became a two-time winner of the World Cup, having previously submitted this tournament to it in 2004. The team has now been led to success by 53-year-old specialist Mike Babcock.

As for the European team (it included hockey players from European countries that are not represented at the tournament by separate teams - such as Slovakia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway and others), then in the same group A it became the second, unexpectedly leaving behind (and out of the tournament) the teams of the USA (3:2, in overtime) and the Czech Republic (3:0).

Russian team at the 2016 World Cup

The Russian national team began its tournament journey with a match against Sweden. Having conceded two goals in the second period with a little more than a minute interval, the team managed to win back one goal with 33 seconds before the end of the final siren. The author of the goal, Alexander Ovechkin, was soon able to again hit the gates of the Swedes, but this time the judges did not count the goal, fixing a violation by the captain of the Russian team.

The next rival of the Russians was the North American team, made up of players from the United States and Canada no older than 23 years old. The meeting was rich in goals. Having conceded one goal in the first period, Oleg Znarka's team responded with four goals. But the opponent was able to close the gap to one goal and keep the intrigue until the final siren. The final score is 4:3 in favor of the Russian team.

In the third match of the group stage, Russia was opposed by the Finnish team, which by that time had already lost its chances of reaching the playoffs. In the starting 20-minute meeting, the opponents failed to distinguish themselves, in the second period the Russians scored twice and consolidated their success in the third segment of the match - a victory with a score of 3:0.

It was not possible to get to the finals of the Russian team, because in the 1/2 finals, as reported, she lost to Canada (3:5).

History of the World Cup

The Ice Hockey World Cup is held under the auspices of the National Hockey League (NHL). All the strongest hockey players defending the colors of the NHL clubs can take part in the tournament. In 1996 and 2004, it was held in a number of cities in North America and Europe; this competition did not take place in Russia. The forerunner of the World Cup was the Canada Cup. In addition to the Canadian team, the US team also won the World Cup in 1996. The Canada Cup has been held five times; four times it was won by Canada, once (in 1981) by the USSR team.

Ice Hockey World Cup 2016 - third international tournament similar format. Will be held in Canada, Ontario, Toronto. All matches will take place at the Air Canada Center.

General information

The organizer and sponsor of the 2016 World Cup is the National Hockey League. She also receives all the income from the sale of tickets and broadcasts of all matches.

The rules for individual games, overtime, playoffs and finals are fully consistent with the rules of the NHL.

It is believed that the Ice Hockey World Cup is a competition similar in level to the Winter Olympics. Here are collected the best teams in the world, which recruit the best hockey players in the country.

However, the national teams of Finland, Russia, Sweden, the Czech Republic and the European team are considered invited and, despite the fact that they may well win prizes, they do not receive any dividends from the tournament.

A bit of history

The Canada Cup is considered the successor of the World Cup of Hockey, which is why it is held according to the rules of the National Hockey League.

The first tournament was held in 1996. Then the European teams played group stage in several European cities, and then went to the playoffs in North America. The American band also played in several cities in the US and Canada.

Passed in the same way next Cup world in 2004.

The difference of 8 and 12 years between tournaments brings both pluses and minuses to the competition. On the plus side, winning the World Cup will be considered more meaningful and valuable to the team. Well, the downside is that many hockey fans have already forgotten about the existence of such a tournament and generally may not attach any importance to it. Especially after such an interesting and unpredictable World Cup, which took place the day before.

Features of the 2016 World Cup

Teams from the USA, Canada, Russia, Finland, the Czech Republic and Sweden have been and remain traditional and permanent participants of the World Cup.

Teams from Germany and Slovakia also took part in the previous tournaments in 1996 and 2004. However, these two teams were not included in this Cup-2016, because in previous similar competitions they scored only 1 point each.

Instead, the organizers of the tournament decided to experiment and included in the list of participants two teams that did not previously exist at all - the North American team and the European team. Let's see how such innovations turn out. Interestingly, the head coach of the European team will be just a specialist excluded from the German Cup.

The Ice Hockey World Cup, which replaced the famous Canada Cup, was first held back in 1996. The venue was the major cities of North America and Europe, and ice rinks sold out at almost every match. In total, 8 teams participated in the tournament, including Finland, Sweden, Russia, Canada, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia and the USA. Despite the opening loss to the Maple Leafs in the final series, the Americans played powerfully in the remaining two games, winning the first significant title since 1980. Team USA goaltender Mike Richter was named MVP of the tournament.

The next World Cup was held only in 2004. The tournament regulations have not changed, and all the same 8 teams as in 1996 also took part in it. All the fights in the knockout round were held in North America, and this time the title rightfully went to Team Canada. The Maple Leaves have never lost to their rivals, and best player tournament was the Canadian Vincent Lecavalier.

In 2011 another World Cup was planned. The proposed venue for it, as well as the participants in the competition, were agreed three years before the event itself, but at the very last moment, the NHL leadership and the Players Association could not agree on some trifles. As a result, the 2011 World Cup was disrupted, and millions of hockey fans were left without a fascinating spectacle.

Venue and rules

Unlike previous competitions that were held in different cities of Europe and North America, the Ice Hockey World Cup 2016 will be held in Toronto. All games will be played at the Toronto Maple Leafs' home arena, which has an estimated capacity of 19,800 spectators. Given Americans' love of hockey, Ice Palace will be filled to capacity.

8 teams expressed their desire to participate in the competition, including:

  • Czech Republic;
  • Canada;
  • Russia;
  • Sweden;
  • Finland;
  • European team;
  • North America team.

The last two teams will consist mainly of young players, whose age does not exceed 23 years. According to the organizers of the tournament, its format will contribute to the development of inexperienced hockey players, tempering them in the fight against the best squads in the world. Winning the World Cup for such players, of course, is beyond the power of more skillful opponents, but future stars will surely be able to provide decent resistance to other teams.

All participating teams will be divided into two main groups. It is already known that the Russian team will fight with rivals from Finland, Sweden and the youth of North America. In the second subgroup, the teams of Canada, the USA, the Czech Republic and Europe will sort things out. All in the elimination round hockey teams will play according to the places occupied in the subgroup. Each team can enter a maximum of 23 players for the tournament, and three of them must be goalkeepers. The names of the first 16 players, including the two goalkeepers, must be announced no later than March 1, 2016.

Does the tournament have a future?

The Hockey World Cup 2016 is a purely commercial event, the prospects for which in the future can only be discussed by a person who is far from the sports sphere. Now the tournament management plans to hold it at least once every 2 years, but already at the preparatory stage for the current competition, a number of disagreements arose with the hockey federations of the participating countries. Some teams do not see the point in the competition, because there is an annual one where the best teams measure their strength. Play twice a year at world championships, not counting the local leagues, many stars are simply not ready, which will directly affect the attendance of the Cup.

At the same time, a lot will depend on the success of the upcoming tournament, because if the event pays off financially, then the solid prize money will force the majority of recognized hockey players to reconsider their opinion on the advisability of participating in the competition. Now the organizers of the Cup are doing everything right - a wide marketing campaign has been launched in the American media, calling on hockey fans to come to the Air Canada Center and cheer for their team.

Prospects for the Russian team at the tournament

It is still too early to guess what place the Russian squad will take in the World Cup. Nevertheless, according to the statement of Roman Rotenberg, who holds the post of first vice-president of the FHR, the tournament in question may become an excellent competitive platform for promising young hockey players. With these words, the official hinted to the fans that don't expect the perfect fit, since the leading players are unlikely to want to take part in the Cup. Eventually, average age Russian hockey players will not exceed 23-24 years by that time, and although the Russians do not have hockey skills, however, the experience of playing on highest level will obviously not be enough.

The good news is that the FHR intends to organize a series of sparring matches with the Czech Republic ahead of the 2016 World Cup. this moment two meetings are planned, during which combinations will be played, players will be distributed among the links, and some hockey players will be eliminated. In any case, two meetings, even with a skilled Czech team, are not enough to fully prepare for a competition that will involve NHL star players.

Thus, the Hockey World Cup 2016 promises to be a landmark event in the world of sports, bringing a lot of positive emotions fans, because ice battles eight of the world's best squads will converge.
