Sergey Shilov is a Paralympic champion. Pskov athlete - champion of the Paralympic Games Sergey Shilov became the "mayor" of the Paralympic village

- Sergei, you were going to end your career four years ago, after the Paralympics in Turin. Maybe you'll change your mind now?

- No, this is a settled issue. The last four years in sports have been hard for me. After Turin, health problems began, and in general it was difficult to combine sports, family life and study at the Diplomatic Academy. But he survived. True, I stopped exercising long distances, all the bet, preparing for Vancouver, made on the sprint.

- Why?

- Age takes its toll. I understood that in longer races it would be difficult for me to compete with the young ones on those tracks, in that weather. This year I tried to drive long races at three stages of the World Cup and took places far from prize money. At some point, the question even arose that it makes no sense for me to go to Vancouver. But my coach Irina Gromova defended me, and the leadership of the Russian Paralympic Committee supported me. But it so happened that the sprint was the last in the Paralympics program, and by that time many had already given up on me.

– And you yourself?

“And I believed it would work. In the sprint, not only physical readiness plays a big role, but also psychological. Perhaps the four-time Vancouver champion Irek Zaripov was physically better than me, but psychologically I was stronger (in that race, Zaripov finished second. - "NO").

Do you remember your winning feelings?

- I was simply overwhelmed with joy, and I didn’t even have the strength to smile. Very tired. I thought of only one thing - now I would have to rest a little ... All emotions remained on the track, even when I received a medal at the awards ceremony, it was somehow empty inside. I don’t remember any easy races for myself, but this Paralympics was especially difficult.

- Even the Olympians complained about the difficult weather, the complexity of the Canadian tracks ...

– Not only in this matter. For us, all the tracks are difficult. It’s just that in general the Paralympic movement is going to be very high level, which almost does not differ from the level Olympic Games. Now it is almost a professional sport. And I am even more glad that I won two gold medals in Vancouver.

- Do you know that now you will receive a reward, like real professionals?

- Yes, sure. It is very pleasant that they have finally stopped separating us from the Olympians and are beginning to perceive us as full-fledged members of a single team - the Russian national team. This is true. We win no less medals, even more, than the Olympians, and the attitude should be appropriate.

- Your coach Irina Gromova says that at the last training camp in Canmore, the officers picked you up late in the evening, after you had already gone to bed. Requirements from the World anti-doping agency to the Paralympians, it turns out, the same as to healthy athletes?

– Yes, WADA officers controlled us in the same way. At that training camp, I was tested for doping three times.

- Sergey, how did you get into wheelchair sports?

- Due to a spinal injury that he received as a result of an accident. I was born in Pskov orienteering, became a candidate for master ... And at the age of 17 this accident happened. While still training in Pskov, he became the national champion in athletics and, as a master of sports in athletics, went to the Games in Barcelona. That's how it went...

– What now?
