In appearance, boxer Valery Brudov seems to be an unapproachable and tough person. When you start talking to him, your opinion about him changes completely. You understand that, apparently, only in the ring he can be like that. In life, the person is sociable and rather gentle.

Dinara KAFISKINA

- Do you consider yourself successful?

There is some career success. I have achieved something. And in order to be a successful man in life, you must have good family, work, home. And it's not about material wealth. After all, for someone the whole world is not enough, but for someone it is enough normal shoes, roofs under the head. I choose the second.

Does boxing force you to give up something?

Someone has the opportunity, in general, not to refuse anything, but someone observes the regime. Like me, for example. I won't have fun until the morning, but rather go to bed if I have a workout the next day. I don’t even remember the last time, as they say, I hung out at night. In general, thanks to boxing, I became very disciplined. I prefer to spend my free time with family and friends. I like to just sit and have a cup of tea, talk about life or go fishing with them and see how they throw spinning rods. Very funny too. Or can I go to children's park ride the rides. Just kidding, of course (laughs). But seriously, I love to read. Mostly classics. From foreign writers I like Jack London, from ours - Nikolai Leskov. Read "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Periodicals are not alien to me either. And sports, of course, including. Moreover, I am interested in all kinds of sports.

- Have there ever been personalities in boxing that you would like to imitate?

There were personalities worthy of emulation. Kostya Ju. For example. Of course, Mike Tyson. I have followed them since childhood. Do I have my own particular style? It's hard to say. I just try to use all my strengths. I keep the pace high.

- What prompted you to take up boxing?
- As a child, I tried a lot of things - I played football, volleyball, and handball, and athletics. Soul to nothing by and large didn't lie. And to boxing, let's say, I was drawn thoroughly. The fact is that my father also boxed and he became my first coach, my first sparring partner. In general, I learned a lot. And I came to the section to Alexander Ivanovich Bekh when I was already 16 years old.

- Isn't it too late?

I agree it's too late. Boxing usually starts much earlier. Some already in ten years under a hundred fights in the asset. My first fights were built at the expense of physical condition. There was no technique or tactics. I, as they say, tried to kill the enemy. And all the same, everything turned out more or less successfully. As an amateur, he fought 118 fights, won about a hundred. In 1999, he received an offer to switch to professional boxing. I did not think long, because at that moment I realized that it would be difficult in amateur boxing. I did not want to be the second, third number, sparring partner of the leading boxers, but I wanted to enter the international arena. I set myself the task of becoming the best of the best.

- And, in general, did you expect yourself to be able to achieve high results someday?

I remember, at the age of 16, I watched the performances of one of my rivals, Hill, on cable television in Pskov. Very strong impressions remained. I had no idea that someday I would meet him in the same ring. When I found out that I would fight with this particular opponent, I took it, in principle, normally. Sometimes you look at the enemy and think how to stay alive. And then, I remember, I felt that I could win. There was some inner peace.

- Who usually supports you on the podium?

No one ever goes abroad with me. I do not take. And at home in Pskov, my parents, friends and beloved are worried about me. But she is not present at the battles. What joy from the fact that she is sitting and her nerves are trembling? And what is the point if we both worry, but we can’t help each other? To the fact that I do boxing, my beloved takes it easy. Not thrilled, but not happy with scenes when I leave for a long time. She understands that I'm doing what I love. And if it was not boxing, but football, or I would be a journalist, I would also perceive it normally. In general, it does not make a cult out of my profession.

- Do you dream of boxing at night?

Happens. I remember when I was still an amateur, I dreamed that I won Olympic Games. Can you imagine? And in real life it turned out that the championship of St. Petersburg. But for me then it was also a big victory.

- How do you keep your physical shape? Are you monitoring your weight?

My optimal weight is 90 kg. 700 gr. I try to stick to it. Although, as far as food is concerned, I never really corrode, but I do not deny myself anything. The most necessary product is black bread and water. I also love fried potatoes performed by my mother or my beloved. They are both good cooks, unlike me. Concerning physical form then, of course, I exercise daily. I got up in the morning and ran. And I do it at different times. I think that one and the same time should not be tied. After all, the body gets used to it, and then it will constantly insistently demand repetition. I need ten hours of sleep. But, to be honest, when there is an opportunity, I allow myself to sleep longer.

- For you, for example, does it matter where you train, perform?

Certainly. If a person is used to training in the same gym, and then he was taken to another, I am sure that he will feel uncomfortable, insecure. The new place is intimidating. And I had to perform, for example, in America at six in the morning. I usually sleep at this time.

- And the atmosphere in the hall can somehow affect you?

My feeling is that most people are neutral about what is happening. If I show something worthy, they will be happy for me. If my opponent shines, he will get a standing ovation from the audience. In principle, this is also normal, because there is no increased excitement. They say that native walls help. But, let's say, when about 1000 people support me in Pskov, this worries me even more. And suddenly you will be disgraced when they beat you in front of your relatives and friends. Especially in front of your loved one.

Notes

An excerpt characterizing Brudov, Valery Alexandrovich

Everyone in the booth was ready, dressed, girded, shod, and only waited for the order to leave. The sick soldier Sokolov, pale, thin, with blue circles around his eyes, alone, not shod and not dressed, sat in his place and with eyes that rolled out from thinness looked inquiringly at his comrades who did not pay attention to him and groaned softly and evenly. Apparently, it was not so much suffering - he was sick with bloody diarrhea - but fear and grief to be left alone made him moan.
Pierre, shod in shoes, sewn for him by Karataev from cybic, who brought a Frenchman to hemming his soles, girded with a rope, approached the patient and squatted down in front of him.
“Well, Sokolov, they don’t quite leave!” They have a hospital here. Maybe you will be even better than ours,” said Pierre.
- Oh my God! O my death! Oh my God! the soldier groaned louder.
“Yes, I’ll ask them now,” said Pierre, and, rising, went to the door of the booth. While Pierre was approaching the door, the corporal who yesterday treated Pierre to a pipe approached with two soldiers. Both the corporal and the soldiers were in marching uniform, in knapsacks and shakos with buttoned scales that changed their familiar faces.
The corporal went to the door in order to close it by order of his superiors. Before release, it was necessary to count the prisoners.
- Caporal, que fera t on du malade? .. [Corporal, what to do with the patient? ..] - began Pierre; but at the moment he said this, he began to doubt whether this was the corporal he knew or another, unknown person: the corporal was so unlike himself at that moment. In addition, at the moment Pierre was saying this, the crackling of drums was suddenly heard from both sides. The corporal frowned at Pierre's words and, uttering a meaningless curse, slammed the door. It became half dark in the booth; drums crackled sharply from both sides, drowning out the groans of the sick man.
“Here it is! .. Again it!” Pierre said to himself, and an involuntary chill ran down his back. In the changed face of the corporal, in the sound of his voice, in the exciting and deafening crackle of drums, Pierre recognized that mysterious, indifferent force that forced people to kill their own kind against their will, that force, the effect of which he saw during the execution. It was useless to be afraid, to try to avoid this force, to make requests or exhortations to people who served as its instruments, it was useless. Pierre knew this now. I had to wait and be patient. Pierre did not go up to the sick man again and did not look back at him. He, silently, frowning, stood at the door of the booth.
When the doors of the booth opened and the prisoners, like a herd of sheep, crushing each other, squeezed into the exit, Pierre made his way ahead of them and went up to the very captain who, according to the corporal, was ready to do everything for Pierre. The captain was also in marching uniform, and from his cold face also looked “it”, which Pierre recognized in the words of the corporal and in the crackle of drums.
- Filez, filez, [Come in, come in.] - the captain said, frowning severely and looking at the prisoners crowding past him. Pierre knew that his attempt would be in vain, but he approached him.
- Eh bien, qu "est ce qu" il y a? [Well, what else?] - looking around coldly, as if not recognizing, the officer said. Pierre said about the patient.
- Il pourra marcher, que diable! the captain said. - Filez, filez, [He'll go, damn it! Come in, come in] - he continued to sentence, without looking at Pierre.
- Mais non, il est a l "agonie ... [No, he is dying ...] - Pierre began.
– Voulez vous bien?! [Go to…] – the captain shouted with an evil frown.
Drum yes yes ladies, ladies, ladies, the drums crackled. And Pierre realized that a mysterious force had already completely taken possession of these people and that now it was useless to say anything else.
The captured officers were separated from the soldiers and ordered to go ahead. There were thirty officers, including Pierre, and three hundred soldiers.
The captured officers released from other booths were all strangers, were much better dressed than Pierre, and looked at him, in his shoes, with incredulity and aloofness. Not far from Pierre walked, apparently enjoying the general respect of his fellow prisoners, a fat major in a Kazan dressing gown, belted with a towel, with a plump, yellow, angry face. He held one hand with a pouch in his bosom, the other leaned on a chibouk. The major, puffing and puffing, grumbled and got angry at everyone because it seemed to him that he was being pushed and that everyone was in a hurry when there was nowhere to hurry, everyone was surprised at something when there was nothing surprising in anything. The other, a small, thin officer, was talking to everyone, making assumptions about where they were being led now and how far they would have time to go that day. An official, in boots and a commissariat uniform, was running around with different parties and looked out for the burned-out Moscow, loudly reporting his observations about what burned down and what this or that visible part of Moscow was like. The third officer, of Polish origin by accent, argued with the commissariat official, proving to him that he was mistaken in determining the quarters of Moscow.

A little less than a year ago, he boxed in the first heavyweight, fighting with a regular sparring partner of the Klitschko brothers for the interim WBO world title. The 43rd fight in his career did not bring the expected victory, and the boxer decided to change weight class, start life from scratch. Now Valery Brudov, once the interim WBA heavyweight champion, is ready to fight in the light heavyweight division. The debut took place 3 months ago, in November 2012. In a rating fight, the Pskov boxer defeated an athlete from Latvia. Immediately after the fight, Valery promised the audience that they would see him in the ring more than once - now in a new category. About what caused the change in weight, how the athlete trains on the eve of new fights and when the next fight, we asked the boxer Valery Brudov himself, who was nominated for the 5th annual regional achievement award "Status Media-2012" in the category "Athlete of the Year".

Valery, your recent performance in the Pskov ring was especially remembered for the fact that it was a duel in a new weight category for you. And immediately - a convincing victory. Tell me, why did you decide to change weight, and how laborious was this process?

Everything somehow happened by itself. I was at a training camp in the USA for a long time, and there my weight began to gradually decrease. One fine day, I got on the scales, and 79 kg 400 grams were displayed there, this is just the light heavyweight limit. Then it was decided to move to light heavyweight. In fact, I have long been advised to change the category, go to or heavyweight, or light heavyweight. The fact is that the category in which I performed is not very interesting in America. And at first I decided to gain weight, try to go to heavyweight. Still, the “royal” weight category is heavyweight.

Was the experience successful?

Yes, I did not even have time to try myself. (smiles) I studied for several months at gym and gained a total of 96 kilograms. But as soon as he arrived in America and began to seriously train, box, the weight began to gradually go away. Every week, consider losing a kilogram. Thus, in six months I “lost” up to 79 kg. So, if someone wants to lose weight, ask me how. (laughs)

How comfortable you feel now, yet the weight has changed significantly. Do you have to limit yourself in some way?

Of course, I have to lead a certain lifestyle. But for me it is not difficult. I stick to the main idea, and it does not run counter to my inner desires. I don’t feel like eating all the time, I don’t limit myself, and I don’t have dreams about food, and I don’t go to the refrigerator at night. Everything worked out by itself, and did not cause any problems. My only regret is that I didn't move up to the light heavyweight category back in 2005. Then there was a great chance to box for the title of world champion in this weight. At that time, I didn’t have much desire to change something in my career, oh, I wish I could turn back time ... In general, looking back, I understand that I boxed my entire professional career in a “foreign” weight.

- But now your weight.

Yes, let's hope that now I was in my weight, and I can show something worthy.

Until recently, I dealt with the termination of the contract with Don King. The agreement to end the cooperation was mutual, but the necessary formalities had to be settled. On this moment I am completely free from my obligations and hope to continue my career in a new direction. In general, if everything works out, I plan to box again at home, in Pskov. A new fight is scheduled for April. But ... let's wait and see.

Valery, it's no secret that for a boxer his sparring partner is of no small importance. Do you have a worthy opponent in the training ring in Pskov?

Thank God, we now have the opportunity to train in a decent gym, with good coach. This is Vladimir Ignatievich Ivasenko (Honored Coach of Russia - ed.). Thank him very much. We have a complete understanding with him, I completely trust him. We had a very good, friendly working atmosphere during training. The process is well established and, I think, it is going on productively for everyone.

- Do you train a lot?

I wake up with thoughts about boxing and fall asleep with them. I mean, I train all day long. Entering the ring and winning is not so easy, nothing will work out of the bay. You need to prepare yourself for the fight. Unfortunately or fortunately, I have to train all day to show something worthy. Thank God, I can train a lot, withstand colossal loads, which, maybe, someone else can not do. In principle, everything works out for me, I have enough strength, and, most importantly, desire. I have no particular illusions. I understand that I am in my 30s. The human age is not long, and sports even more so. Someday this song will end, but I would like "not to be excruciatingly painful for the aimlessly lived years." In the future, I may become a coach myself.

- You train children in the grappling section, teach them percussion techniques, is that right?

Yes, but these are one-time activities. I'm still just looking at coaching. I don't want my experience to be wasted. Everything that I suffered, experienced and went through, in principle, maybe it will be useful to someone. But for now, as an active athlete, I'm mainly focused on continuing my own career. I think it will not be possible to combine both my performances, and preparation for them in the gym, and train someone else. I think it's better to do one thing well than ten things badly.

- That is, now active boxing, performances and a career, and in the future, perhaps, coaching?

Yes, in principle, I tune in to it. It is said: do not bury your talent in the ground. I think it would be just stupid to take such an experience as mine and “bury it”.

- How does your family feel about your decision to continue your career as a professional boxer?

Accepts my choice. Worried, of course, but fully supportive. My dad once said: “Valerik, you have chosen a very difficult path for yourself.” But my family, first of all, see me as a person, not a boxer. For them, I'm just Valery Brudov, who was born in the 76th year. For someone son, for someone husband or father.

- Would you like your son to become a professional boxer?

Only if it is his personal choice. Just like it was with me. I became a boxer because I wanted to. But, of course, he must be able to stand up for himself and his loved ones. I remember working in gym in St. Petersburg, there hung a poster: “Boxing for a modern citizen is like a sword for a nobleman. Not owning it is indecent." Very true words.
