The 2018 Davis Cup is the 107th edition of the Men's Team Tennis Tournament and will run from February 2 to November 25, 2018. Dozens of national teams divided into regional clusters will take part in the competition. The main focus will be on the World Group, the Davis Cup elite. Where and when will the 2018 Davis Cup take place
The fights of the World Group members will begin on February 2 and end on November 25, 2018. The national tennis teams will play each other according to the Olympic system. Based on the results of several rounds, the two best teams will meet in a culminating series of fights.
The 2018 Davis Cup final will be held in Geneva, France from 23 to 25 November 2018. Danish Copenhagen, American Miami, Turkish Istanbul, Chinese Wuhan and Italian Turin also claimed the role of host.

Davis Cup matches are held between men's teams, divided into different levels and groups. The winners and outsiders in the groups move to another level next season, respectively, to a higher or lower one.
At the highest level - "World Group" ( world group) at the preliminary (qualification) stage, 12 butt matches are held between 24 teams (format " Home & Away"). Formation of pairs of opponents is carried out by lot. During this procedure, the top 12 teams from the previous season are seeded and therefore cannot play each other.

- 4 teams that lost in the quarter-finals of the World Group in the previous year;
- 8 winning teams playoff round to participate in the World Group.
16 teams participate in the playoff round, of which: 8 teams that did not qualify for the quarterfinals of the previous final stage ( placed 9th-16th in the group stage), 4 best teams from group I zones "Europe/Africa" and 2 best teams from group I zones "America" and "Asia/Oceania" (about zones and groups ).

Team matches consist of 4 singles and 1 doubles match and are held in early February ( 5 days after completion Australian Open» ) within two days (Friday and Saturday) according to the so-called "Meet & Greet" format: on the 1st day - two singles matches; in the 2nd - a doubles match, and then two singles. The break between doubles and singles is 30 minutes. On the first day, the second numbers of each team meet with the first numbers of the opposing team. Player numbers are determined by the team captain and do not have to correspond to the position of the players in the national or ATP rankings. Which of the opposing pairs in singles starts playing first (on the 1st and 2nd day) is determined by lot. Break between matches - 20 minutes ( ed. - This also applies to zonal competitions).
The host side is determined from where the competing teams last played ( meetings on final stage, about which below, are not taken into account). If the opponents have never met, then who will play in the "native walls" is determined by lot. The host party is given the right to choose the coverage of the courts.
Match format in singles and doubles, as well as at all other levels and stages of the competition– up to 2 won sets with tie-breaks in each ( standard scoring system).
The 12 winning teams from the preliminary round advance to the final round of the "Davis Cup the World Cup of Tennis", in which 4 teams from the previous cup semi-finals and 2 teams that received wild card(wild card). Preferential invitations are distributed by the coordinating committee consisting of: two ITF representatives, one Kosmos Tennis representative and one former players- Laureates of the nomination " Davis Cup Award for commitment to the ideals and spirit of the competition ".

The group winners and the top two teams from second place advance to the final stage - playoffs, where the winner of the trophy is determined. Playoffs are held on Olympic system starting from the quarterfinals.
In case of equality of points in the group ( each team won one match) the advantage is given to the team in the following successively applied indicators:
- by the best difference between won and lost sets;
- by the best difference between won and lost games.
The determination of the top two runners-up teams is determined in a similar manner.
Sowing in tournament bracket produced in the following order:
- winners of groups "A" and "B" - in positions 1 and 8, respectively;
- the two best teams that took 2nd places are in positions 2 and 7, provided that they do not play in the quarterfinals with a team that was in the same group with them;
- winners of groups "C" and "D" - in positions 3 and 6, respectively;
- the winners of groups "E" and "F" - in positions 4 and 5, respectively.

The two worst teams according to the results of the group stage of the final stage next season move to the zonal competitions, and the remaining 12 teams ( ranked 5th-16th) receive an automatic right to participate in the next preliminary stage of the "World Group".

Teams not included in " world group", participate in zonal competitions. There are three zones, composed on a geographical basis: "Europe/Africa", "America", "Asia/Oceania". The first two consist of three groups (zone "Europe/Africa" in "group III" divided into two zones: "Europe", "Africa"), and "Asia/Oceania" has four groups.

The number of countries in the groups may vary depending on the number of participating teams.
The first two groups of regional zones hold competitions according to the Olympic system. Teams meet in the "Home & Away" format, i.e. at home or away, depending on where they met last time or by lot, if they did not meet. Each meeting is held over two days (Friday, Saturday) and consists of 4 singles and one doubles match in a 3-set format with tie-breaks.
In groups III and IV - in a round robin system of two or four subgroups with "playoffs" at the final stage. In these groups, singles matches are played on the same day. In case of a draw on the second day, the winner is determined by the result of the pairs match. Meetings are held in one of the countries participating in the group.
Group I competition is held in September. In other groups - in April and September.
The rules and format of matches are the same as in the preliminary stage of the "World Group". If the outcome of the meeting is decided after 3 matches (3:0), then the fourth may not be held. If carried out, upon agreement of the team captains and referee, then the third set, if necessary, takes place in the format " super tiebreak". The fifth match is also held by agreement of the team captains and the referee.
In the case when the team match ends after the fourth match (3:1), the fifth match is held, again, with the agreement of the captains and the referee.
Team captains, if it is decided to play matches after a winning team result, are allowed to nominate tennis players at their own discretion, provided that the composition of the pairs of opponents will not repeat the matches of the first day.
Rating points were awarded to the team only for victories, and their number depends on which division the team plays in. For example, the winner in any round of the World Group matches receives 2000 points, then for a similar achievement in the first division (in the zone) - 400, and the victory in the first round in the zone group is estimated at 80 points.
The place in the ranking was determined by the sum of points scored by the team over the past four years with a reduction factor. That is, 75% of last year's points, 50% of the year before last and 25% of points earned three years ago are added to the points received in the current year. In addition, there is a system of bonuses - for winning away.
Author's note - Since 2015, the ATP has ceased to award ranking points to players playing in the "World Group", which has reduced the attractiveness of the competition for top tennis players. Players playing in other groups have not used this opportunity before.

The number of teams in each zone group varies depending on the number of participating teams.

If only one team advances to the playoffs, only two sub-groups "A" and "B" are formed, and the venue is one country. The winners of the subgroups play in the playoffs and the winner advances to the playoffs of a higher level.
Underdog teams also compete for the right to remain in a group with teams that are challenged to a higher level through the playoffs.
In zonal groups, meetings are held from three matches and on one day: two singles and one doubles.
Up to 5 players can be included in an application for a match meeting. Usually a team consists of 3-4 athletes, depending on the presence of strong enough tennis players in the country and their desire to defend national colors. Not later than one hour before the start of the draw procedure, the captains of both teams may replace two players from the original application. In the event of unforeseen circumstances on the second day, the team captains are allowed to make substitutions, provided that the referees must be notified in advance in writing. On the last day, when the outcome of the meeting is determined, the captains are allowed to put up tennis players at their own discretion to play out the remaining matches, with the condition that the composition of the pairs of opponents will not repeat the matches of the first day.
At the beginning of June, a draw of teams in groups and zones for the next year is held. The starting circle of competitions in the first and second World groups takes place at the beginning of February. Semi-finals of the World Group and play-off matches (first and second groups) are held at the end of April, and the final series is held in the first half of November. All meetings are held over two weekends.
Regional Group I competitions are held after the end of the Australian Open in February. In group II: in the zones "Europe/Africa" and "Asia/Oceania" - in June; in the zone "America" - in April. In group III - in April.
From 2020, the Federation Cup in the World Group will be held in a new format. 16 teams will play in the qualification. Matches will be held February 7-8. The eight winners will be joined by the 2019 Fed Cup finalists (Australia and France), the final host (Hungary 2020-2022) and the wild card holder. At the final stage (April 14-19, 2020), the teams will be divided into four groups. Then the semi-finals and the final will be played, similar to the Davis Cup.
