Nel Big big or huge? It's about Nel Big, Nel Attack, Nel Tornado, Nel Storm.

I have acquaintances comrades who do not recognize large coils. But there are those who do not use small and even medium ones. I could not decide for myself: which sensors are better, large or smaller? With experience and accumulation of different search coils On my metal detectors, I realized that alternating them gives a greater effect than using any one.

One of the well-known manufacturers of coils for metal detectors, having a large the lineup, there is a company NEL. On mine, I often use (and very effectively) the smallest nelka - 5 ''.

But the largest coil from Nel, I didn’t even try, but I couldn’t even see it.

And somehow I came across an advertisement for the sale of the largest Ukrainian reel - Nel Big 15×17 for metal detectors Garrett ACE series. And why not buy this Nelka, because it will be interesting (informative) and not only for me!? 😉

When buying a large sensor, I wanted to answer a lot of questions regarding the Big:

  1. How big is the 15" by 17" coil compared to the others, but just a little smaller?
  2. what kind of search with Big: determination of the center of the target, load on the bar and arm fatigue, detector stability at maximum settings, phantom?
  3. this Nel Big is far from new - it is 3-4 years old (neither a guarantee nor a box has been preserved). What is her condition after a few years?

As you can see, I couldn’t help but buy Nel Big for aces - banal curiosity prevailed at home. 🙂

In this article I will try to answer all these questions and the most intriguing one will be this one: “what happened to Nel Big?” because now I don't have it anymore.

Acquaintance.

At the post office, having received not a small cardboard box, I went home to look at its contents. Yes, I didn’t do it quite right, because I had to immediately inspect my purchase, as they say, “without leaving the cash register.” But, fortunately, the seller was conscientious and got out of the box at home what he paid for.

The first impression of the Big was neutrally positive, as the size of the coil did not seem huge - a little more than a fifteen-inch Attack, that's all. At first glance, the Big is just a bit wider, which shouldn't cause any problems in use.

I carefully review my purchase. Protection without cracks and chips, the pressure seal and the connection connector are intact, the wire is not damaged. Only after a few years can we say with full confidence how good the product is. Having examined the used Big, I was personally convinced of the quality of Nel products. Yes, the coil is made of excellent (not cheap) materials, but! still need a field test that will show technical level nests after a few (3 - 4) years of use.

It is impossible to check the coil (any) normally in the apartment - due to the mass of electrical interference, the metal detector starts to go crazy. But, even in such conditions, it was clear that with my purchase you can safely go on a search.

Field trials.

About 20 kilometers from the city, there is a place where I collected early Soviet kopecks, imperial copper and medieval silver last year.

It was on this field that only I was lucky to find the most. There were times when comrades went there without me and did not bring a single coin. So this year, they drove there for an hour, wandered through three metal detectors there and found nothing, left. And then they told me that the field was disked and there was nothing there.

It would be better if it was plowed up - then there would be much more finds. But, despite this, I still decided to run there with a big reel, not hoping for a good climb.

I went out on the field, turned on the ACE 300i, set the scent to maximum and froze. The metal detector did not make a single sound. He shook the device - silence. Spent a shovel in front of the coil - the detector reacted. How so?! How can a big coil be so quiet??? Okay, let's start searching.

Frankly, working with Nel Big 15x17 on a flat floor, I got only pleasure. In one stroke, the coil covered a large area, from which he walked with a wide step. I liked walking like this! The bar and arm felt confident, and I went around more and more, spending a minimum of time.

The response from the colored target was confident and clear. Yes, I saw traces of comrades, but they were so lonely that this did not prevent me from collecting antique bronze.

What is remarkable about this place is that here I find the backs of knives.

Curious is the fact that there are butts, but no knives. How many did not dig iron here, but did not get a knife. But on the other hand, I came across such a spoon cutter:

Last year, an armchair and an arrowhead were dug up here. And in this - a tool for cutting wooden spoons.

Of course, he didn’t leave without a coin - the early Soviet 10 kopecks got out.

Big with a bayonet and a half confidently discovered an object that before that I had only seen in photographs - this is a samovar spout.

Then he showed this bronze find to many acquaintances and asked them to guess what kind of object. But, no one has ever answered correctly :).

The Garrett ACE 300i and ACE 350 metal detectors have one feature - an increased sense for lead.

Last year, at the same place, but with a metal detector for one of my finds of a lead piece, a comrade with ICQ 350 picked up five of them. I don’t know if he was lucky or really the 350th taxis, but the fact remains. And I was not at all surprised when the 300i almost from the very beginning of the search, I got lead. He dug up notably, despite the fact that the place was knocked out.

This time I didn’t get any silver - I went to one point, which I managed to visit even in the spring. It would be necessary to move to the side, or go further, but I simply did not have enough time for this maneuver.

Target localization technology.

Many people with even a medium-sized coil find it difficult to find the beginning of a detected target. Apparently they don't know how to find it.

With Nel Big, I did not dig pits in the diameter of the coil - one or two deep mounds and an object in the dump. To accurately find the target in the ground, the comrade taught me. How does he do. When a target is detected, it pulls the coil back until the signal disappears. And then, slowly approaching, he tries to discover the find with his nose. The first signal is the beginning. Stepping back a little, he makes a dig. And, voila - the target is in the dump. Big has an excellent scanning beam, so its nose easily detects the beginning of an object in the ground.

Conclusion.

The Nel Big 15x17 reel is not huge, it's just big. Working with it is as easy as with any other size above average.

Despite size for weight, I'm of average build, easily spent three hours on the field with Big. Yes, sometimes I dug deep, but this did not tire me, and if it were not for the time limit, I would have dug for another two hours.

Frankly, the Nel Big coil on the Garrett ACE 300i metal detector surprised me at one moment. This happened after about an hour and a half spent with her in the field. Just at one moment I remembered what happened to me mobile phone and during this time, working at full sensitivity, the metal detector never reacted to it. In an article about one of the serious shortcomings of this detector, I noted its useless noise immunity, especially to a mobile phone. But, if I had tested ICQ with Big, I would never have noticed this. Why the 300th ACE is so quiet with a large coil, I don't know.

Even being used, the Big worked perfectly - I really liked this coil from NEL.

Where is Nel Big now?

Since the beginning of the summer, he has put his ACE 300i up for sale. Apparently, because of the mediocre standard mono coil, no one wanted to buy a metal detector from me. Everyone bargained heavily, hoping for the saved money to buy a better sensor, for example, the same one. And so, after the first cop with Big, he added to the ad that a 15 × 17-inch coil is possible and edited the price upwards. In less than a couple of days, a buyer showed up for this kit. Almost without bargaining, he took Big with a metal detector. I'm sure he was happy with his purchase.

It's about Nel Big, Nel Attack, Nel Tornado, Nel Storm

It happens that treasure hunters who first tried in a real search large diameter coils produced by the company NEL, complain about some instability in their work, false positives, etc.

As a rule, the problem is that users simply do not take into account a number of features inherent in these particular coils and try to work with them in the same way as with the regular ones that are supplied with metal detectors of the series X Terra.

In fact, it is enough to understand a few simple rules and NEL search coils will delight you not only with stable work on different types ground, but also tenacity to all sorts of useful targets (not just coins) and, of course, unsurpassed detection depth.

The impressive diameter of the coil itself provides a greater coverage of the ground area when scanning. On the one hand, this, of course, will reduce the number of passes of useful targets during wiring, but on the other hand, more garbage targets fall into the sensitivity zone of the coil, and, in addition, interference from the ground is much more noticeable. The same situation with the depth of detection, larger coil diameter means larger detection depth, but at the same time, “left” objects again fall into the sensitivity zone and the amount of interference from the ground increases.

Firstly, it is necessary to reasonably select a site for conducting a search. The question is, well, what can you do on a brownie spot (strewn with met. Garbage) with a 15-inch steering wheel? The answer is obvious - to get a "dislocation of the brain."

A large diameter is used to work in places clean of metal debris, it can be either a total cleaning of a promising site or reconnaissance of the area.

Secondly, the wiring must be significantly slower than with standard coils, as in any case, a certain number of non-useful targets are present in the ground + natural interference from the ground, respectively, with a large-diameter coil, the “brains” of the device need more time to process the signal, the area of the scanned soil is larger. Slow sweeps contribute to a better understanding of what kind of target is under your coil, i.e. clearer object identification.

Third, it is unnecessary to try without fail to raise the sensitivity of the metal detector to maximum values. In search coils NEL is implemented latest technology DD Booster (built-in passive amplifier), plus a diameter of 15 - 17 inches, which allows them to "see" targets at a much greater depth at lower sensitivity than standard (native) coils.

It is extremely important to carry out detuning from ground interference as often as possible, it doesn’t matter if it’s manual or auto, the main thing is not to forget to repeat this procedure periodically.

As you know, even on the same field, the type of soil can change up to several times, and if for coils of medium (relatively speaking) diameter this is not so critical, then the stability of the “rudders” is even affected.

Also, the correctness of the detuning from electrical interference significantly affects the stability of the operation of a large-diameter coil. At one time, the manufacturer generally recommended setting the interference detuning channel to 0.

Another point, if your road shoes have metal inserts, then it is better to choose a different shoe. Coils of large diameter (from 15 inches) perfectly "see" the metal in the shoes and, of course, react to it.

By the way, when installing the NEL coil instead of the standard one, it is recommended (and it works) to restart the device. Personally, I made sure to carry out this procedure on my Terra 705.

Everything is simple here.

  1. Install the NEL coil, with the device turned off, simultaneously hold down the + and - buttons.
  2. Turn on the device.
  3. After the icons displaying all the options of the metal detector begin to appear on the screen in turn, the + and - buttons can be released.
  4. We are waiting for all the icons to appear on the display and turn off the device.
  5. We turn on the metal detector, set the necessary settings for all parameters, do ground balancing and go ahead.

Keep these simple rules in mind and NEL coils will not disappoint you.

Video testing coil Nel Big for Terra:

From the manufacturer:
"Just arrived from St. Petersburg. Tested Coiltek for x-Terra and NEL.
Coiltek even lost to Tornado in depth, not to mention BIG.
The tests were carried out on a fixed manual ground balance, noise detuning 0, fluke 28.
Measured 2 kopecks of Alexander 2 (1817).
Coiltek - 27 cm.
NEL Tornado - 30 cm.
NEL Big - 35 cm (they didn’t dig deeper, because the mainland was deeper - solid stones).
All tests are in the ground wall. Soil chernozem with clay."

It is important to remember that a large diameter coil gives an increase in search depth. but there is also the other side of the coin. With a large coil, it is practically impossible to search in heavily littered areas, since several objects can simultaneously fall into the working area of the coil, which will complicate accurate identification. Small search coils are used to search trashy areas, for example: a 5 inch search coil for F2, F4, which has a smaller search depth, but due to its small size is more selective.

Buying a searchcoil for a metal detector is always a treat for a digger, but here you need to know what to buy. As you know, there are a great many varieties of search coils, many manufacturers, one is better than the other. Coils are DD and mono, small snipers, ellipsoid and large ones for quickly breaking through the territory. Which coil to choose so that it not only meets your requirements, but also fits your metal detector.
Since my colleagues and I currently use x terra series metal detectors, let's consider which coils are suitable for them. Today we will analyze a large coil for quick "combing" of a large area - deep coil Nel Big Tornado, which is suitable for all models of the x terra series, is:

The terra series metal detectors are still very popular, because their price is quite reasonable, and the quality and search efficiency are at their best. Therefore, for them, there are a lot of all sorts of different coils designed to facilitate the search and make it even more convenient and efficient.

So, a large depth coil Nel Big Tornado.

The design of the coil is carefully designed, it is very rigid, since the coil weighs a lot (900 grams), so the fastening to the metal detector must be of high quality. The large diameter of the coil (43 by 38 cm) allows you to comb large areas in a relatively short period of time. In addition to the large diameter, the coil gives a phenomenal depth of detection of coins, for example, Catherine’s penny sees at a depth of 50-55 cm. True, you can immediately forget about small targets, on the surface it will certainly catch them, but if a little deeper, then you will probably miss it. Well, a large deep coil is not designed to search for small things, but to search for treasures and large coins, which it sees just fine.

Some features of working with a coil - the mobile phone must be turned off when working with this coil, since the phone is phoning when searching for a signal and the coil gives false positives.
The coil seems just huge, with such an abandoned village you can explore an abandoned village for 3 hours maximum))
As an additional reconnaissance coil, it will come in handy, after all, first you need to find a place in the tract where coins come across, and then carefully “hit” this place with other coils, such as a high-frequency coil at 18.75 kHz (allows you to hook more deeply medium and small targets ).

The cost of the coil is decent - 9800 rubles for 2012.

You can see more about the power and depth of the coil in the video review.

Nel Big 15x17" is the largest awkward DD coil for Minelab X-Terra metal detectors. Thanks to its larger diameter, it is best suited for deep reconnaissance. It is recommended for use on soils without excessive contamination by metal debris. It copes well with work in conditions of high mineralization of the soil.

Comparison between Nel 12x13 and Nel Big coils

Rigid design and serious size make the model exceptionally sensitive to small and large targets lying at a depth of up to 50 centimeters! The air test on Ekaterina's penny shows a result of 58 cm. The same test in heavy soil is 45 cm. In comparison with the standard coil, it shows an increase in depth by 40% and a scan area by 50%. If you use the device strictly for its intended purpose (for intelligence), it will be difficult for it to compete.

The coil is equipped with a signal amplifier for better operation on difficult ground, reliably protected from interference of any origin. As always, the signature awkward filling of the hull is at its best. The sensor is completely waterproof. Elastic pressure seal eliminates the appearance of phantoms. The strongest composite coating allows you to work with the coil without additional plastic protection (included in the kit).
