This year the French squad is in great shape, becoming the winners of the World League.

In the final, the French team defeated Brazil 3:2, and the leader of the French, winger Irwin Ngapeth became the most valuable player of the Final Six held in Brazil.

Poland national team bookmakers also consider her the favorite of the tournament, but more because of the status of the hosts than because of her real strength.

The Poles won their only league title in 2009 and bronze in 2011, but the host team hasn't shined in the last couple of years.

At the European Championship in 2015, Poland was eliminated in the quarterfinals, in 2016 it was only 11th in the World League, and in 2017 - 8th.

Another favorite of the tournament - Italy national team who won medals at three recent championships Europe: silver in 2011 and 2013, and bronze in 2015.

Also among the favorites of the European volleyball championship are the teams Serbia(winner of European Championship 2011 and bronze medalist European Championship 2013) and Germany.

Russian team

The Russian squad is also among the favorites of the upcoming European tournament and intends to compete for medals.

The Russians became European champions in 2013, beating Italy 3-1 in the final. However, in 2015 Russian team flew out of the tournament already in the quarterfinals, losing to the same Italy 0:3.

In the World League this season, the Russian team lost to Brazil in five sets and failed to reach the semi-finals.

After this failure, the composition of the Russian team was slightly changed. Experienced setters returned to the team Alexander Butko And Sergey Grankin who were at the Olympics (2012) in London.

Group A is led by the world champions from Poland, who will play the opening match of the championship with the Serbs on Thursday at the football National Stadium in Warsaw. The organizers expect that the attendance record for volleyball matches will be broken - in 2014, the opening match of the World Championship among men's teams was also held here between the national teams of Poland and Serbia, which was attended by 61.5 thousand people.

The remaining Group A matches (the national teams of Finland and Estonia will also play here) will be held at the Ergo Arena, located between the cities of Gdansk and Sopot. The semi-finals on 2 September and the match for third place and the final on 3 September will take place in Krakow at the Tauron Arena.

The strongest squad arrived in Poland

As part of the Russian team at the European Championship will perform:

The Russian team led by Sergei Shlyapnikov this season played in the World League, where they managed to reach the final tournament, held in early July in the Brazilian Curitiba. However, the Russian team lost to rivals from Brazil and Canada without making it to the semi-finals. The winner of the World League was the team of France, which will be one of the favorites and the European Championship, besides the French have to defend their title. Two years ago, the French team won the first trophy in its history, defeating rivals from Slovenia 3-0 in the final in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The main contender for victory is the Polish team, which in 2014 became the world champion at home, but unsuccessfully performed at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, finishing fifth. The Poles failed to make it to the final tournament of the World League, having lost five out of nine matches, but they should perform better at the home European Championship. The work of the new head coach of the Polish national team, Italian Ferdinando di Giorgi, who took over only in May, should also have an effect. Former mentor club "Zaksa" previously worked, including in the "Torch" from Novy Urengoy.

Your ticket to the World Cup is already in your pocket

The tournament in Poland is not a qualifying tournament for the upcoming World Championship in Italy and Bulgaria in a year, where the host teams have already received tickets from Europe, as well as Poland, France, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Russia, Serbia, Finland and Belgium.

Everyone knows the saying that Monday is a hard day. Weekends and holidays are behind us, only a long and difficult new working week lies ahead. Someone after the weekend is full of energy and desire to work, someone is tormented by a hangover, and someone is ready to fall asleep at the workplace, but one way or another, everyone has to start a new working week.

The first year after the Olympics is a kind of Monday of the Olympic cycle. The work is still hard, but it is already underway. In Russian volleyball, this Monday is especially difficult. The men's team is trying to go through a generational change, but not everything goes smoothly. The first serious test, after which it will be possible to sum up the solid results of the season, will be the European Championship, which will be held in Poland from August 24 to September 3. And from the Russian team in this tournament, you can expect anything - from failure to triumph.

Youth can't do it alone

The Russian national team in 2017 took fifth place in the next World League draw. Taking into account what problems the team had with the roster during the tournament, as well as the fact that in the clip Sergei Shlyapnikov were entirely young volleyball players, this result can be considered successful. That's just, as practice has shown, our team cannot fully rely on young people yet. Before the European Championship Main coach brought together a much more experienced team, returning to the clip many titled masters.

“When serving, a scoreboard hits the eye. You have to get used to the light

Teamwork through routine, search for game connections and solving problems with psychology - the Russian team is preparing for the European Men's Championship.

Before the most important tournament of the year, Shlyapnikov summoned nine volleyball players under the banner of the national team at once, who did not play in the World League. This and both binders - Grankin And Butko, and gamers Berezhko And Markin, and diagonal Mikhailov, as well as blocking Aschev, Volvich And Ostapenko and libero Golubev. Thus, those who played in the World League, there are five left: Volkov, Feoktistov, Kurkaev, Martynyuk And Zhigalov. In such a mixed composition, the team played at the Wagner Memorial in Krakow, where they took third place, beating the Canadian team, but losing to the teams of France and Poland. However, tournament result in this case, receded into the background. The main task of the Russian team in Krakow was to work out interactions and game connections. Whether it turned out - the European Championship will show.

By the way, following the results of the Wagner Memorial, two changes took place in the national team. Place blocker Alexey Ostapenko took Ilya Vlasov, and the follower Alexandra Markina replaced Egor Klyuka. Both volleyball players missed the tournament in Krakow because they were recovering from injuries. On this moment both Ilya and Egor are ready to help the team at the main tournament of the year in Poland.

Bulgaria, Slovenia, Spain…

The scheme of the European Championship in 2017 has not changed. 16 teams are divided into four quartets, in which they will play each other in a round robin system. The teams that take second and third places go to the 1/8 finals, and the winners of the groups go directly to the quarterfinals. The Russian national team at the group stage will have to play with the teams of Bulgaria, Slovenia and Spain - the quartet is not easy, but quite passable. Bulgaria has an experienced team that, being in good shape and mood, can beat anyone. For example, the Bulgarians beat Russia this season - in the World League they got out with 0:2. The Spaniards will play in the European Championship for the first time in the last eight years: they are progressing, but our team must beat them. The Slovenian national team in 2015 surprised the whole of Europe by taking second place in the continental championship. Slovenians strong team, but it will not be easy for them to climb as high again.

The Russian national team at the last European Championship, by the way, set an anti-record, stumbling in the quarterfinals and taking only sixth place. Before the Russian team since 1993 did not fall below the fifth. In total, our team has seven different medals of continental championships: three bronze, three silver and one gold, won in 2013 at a tournament that was held, by the way, in Denmark and Poland. At that tournament, the Russians started with an unexpected defeat from the Germans with a score of 0:3, but they pulled themselves together and won all the remaining meetings, giving only four games to their opponents in six fights.

The goal is to take the top spot

The favorites of the European Championship should include two teams. At home and with the support of their fans, the Polish team will try to do everything possible to win the first continental championship gold since 2009.

The main competitor of the Poles, most likely, will be the French team, which in last years bloomed right before our eyes. The French are coming to Poland as current European Championship winners and newly crowned World League champions, so winning another trophy will be a matter of honor for them.

On the eve of the European Championship, Sergei Shlyapnikov outlined the task - to take a prize at the tournament. Undoubtedly, our team has the resources to fulfill it. The main thing is to properly dispose of them. In Poland, our team will first of all have to cope with themselves, build their own game, and then they can count on defeating any opponent, and therefore a place in the top three at the end of the tournament.

The head of the All-Russian Volleyball Federation put it even more simply Stanislav Shevchenko: “My expectations from the tournament are the same as all the fans. We need to show a beautiful game at the European Championship. I think the team is capable of that, and then the result will come.”
