Principles for Teaching Tennis to Children

The key to keeping players interested in tennis is teaching them how to serve, keep the ball in play and keep score.

The study of game situations in training allows children to understand the meaning of the game. Much of what we have to teach them, children learn at ease in a playful environment.

A description of tennis comes from the mouth of the child himself!

“There is a player on both sides of the net. One hits the ball into the court, the other runs after it and returns it back. They both keep running and hitting the ball until someone misses it!”

Thus, the child himself understands the essence of the game: there are two players, a court, movement and the ability to use a racket. The coach must remember all these components, and not just the ability to use a racket. Including all children in training process on the court, you can prepare your players for real competition.

Court

Mark the space visually so that players can see it:. when the ball is in the court, and when - out of it ("out")
  • where they should stand (outside the court / baseline)
  • where will the ball go
  • where to send the ball (emphasis on control)
  • where they themselves are on the court (helps develop orientation on the court)

Small players need a clearly defined space. However, do not lose sight of the fact that children must understand where the lines lead, let them lay them out themselves. This will allow the child to feel confident, to realize that they can come and play with their parents or friends. After all, the court is easy to install outside of class.

Rival

Tennis is a game of confrontation. It can only take place if there is also a player on the other side. Any exercise, from the red level and above, is based on the participation of two players. As a result, the child comes to the conclusion that the rally did not end only because he broke the ball over the net.

He develops skills in hitting back (all hits in tennis except the serve). Before hitting the ball, it must be received. The player learns to see where the opponent is and play the ball in the opposite corner from him.

Children also benefit from outdoor play. This helps to understand that the ball does not always fly the same way, develops reaction and the ability to adapt to each individual ball. Using this approach, you will see how quickly players learn to keep the ball in play and compete.

Brief description of the red, orange and green levels of tennis

Red level - short description

The red level is First stage games in
tennis ages 10 and under. It allows
players to quickly start serving, playing draws and playing for the score.

Age

This level is for children
under 8 years old, but everyone can play it
for fun and companionship.

Court

The size of the court is 11-12m long and 5-6m wide, the net is stretched at a height of 80cm (see Chapter 1 'Court Marking' for how to quickly and easily mark a court).

Balls and rackets

Both foam and felt balls can be used. They are larger than orange, green or standard yellow balls. Red balls are 75% slower than regular balls.
The maximum racket length is 23 inches (58.42 cm), for players aged 5-7 years, a 19 inch (48.26 cm) or 21 inch (53.34 cm) racket is more suitable, depending on their physical characteristics and strength.

Counting system

Tie-breaks up to 7 or 10 points are the original scoring system (shorter tie-breaks can also be played). More experienced players may try to play a match of 3 tiebreaks up to 7 points. Timed matches (up to 15 minutes) can be a good solution.

Competition Format

Children should start competing in teams using formats with more matches for each player. Doubles matches are played at the age of 7 years and older, because at a younger age it is difficult for children to work together. For very young children, competitions can be presented in the form of relay races and multidirectional exercises. The optimal duration of the competition is 1-3 hours.

If possible, competitions are best held in your club in a familiar environment. By gaining confidence in a familiar place, children will be able to play in other clubs close to home.

Players begin by learning how to keep the ball in play, then gaining basic tactical and technical knowledge with an emphasis on serving, dribble and play.

The basis of the red level - good performance simple things and the study of technical aspects related to certain tactical situations that the player encounters at the red level.
The transition to the orange level occurs when the skills of the red level satisfy a certain set of parameters (see the section "Player Development").

Orange level - short description

Players moving from red to orange apply all their acquired playing skills on a larger court with more fast ball. Adult "beginners" can start playing right from the orange level due to their physical characteristics.

Age

Optimal age to transition to orange
level - 8 or 9 years. Some children who come to tennis later may stay at this level until they are 10 or 11 years old.

Court

Orange court size 18t x 6.5t (as shown) or 8.23t (full court width); grid height 80st. See Chapter 1 Court Markings for a quick and easy court marking.

Balls and rackets

The orange ball is similar in size to the yellow ball, but 50% slower and has a lower bounce. The length of the racket for playing on such a court is 23 inches (58.24 cm) and 25 inches (63.5 cm).
Counting system
Since the players have grown up and are accustomed to competition, a longer match format of 3 tie-breaks or 1 short set up to 4 games can be used.

Competition Format

Children continue to participate in team competitions in singles and doubles (shortened matches). More confident players may want to play in individual competitions. Most competition formats are 2-4 hours long.

Venue of the competition

Make sure the competition is well organized and in a familiar setting as this will motivate less confident children to continue competing. Players may start taking short trips to compete.

Children begin to play all over the court, going to the net, learning how to attack and play defense, and apply their skills on a larger court. The game becomes more dynamic for those who have moved from the red level. However, it is still a good idea to focus on the core tennis skills and allow the player to develop other skills during regular matches. The experience of playing match meetings contributes to the development of tactical thinking.

Green level - short description

The green level is final stage in preparing the player to use the yellow (standard) ball. In addition to being an ideal opportunity to test acquired tennis skills, green tennis forces the player to move around the court and win back balls flying at different heights and at different speeds.

Age

The age of playing green tennis is 9 - 10 years. The time it takes to reach this level depends on the ability of the children and the age at which they start playing tennis. An important aspect of this level, as in all others, is the gradual progress of the players. As before, older children can also play on the green level using the green ball.

Court

Green court size - standard size tennis court. The transfer of players to this court is carried out when they are fully ready to control the entire space of the standard court.
Balls and rackets
The green ball is 25% slower than the yellow ball and bounces higher than the orange ball.
Players should use racquets 25 inches (63.5 cm) and 26 inches (66.04 cm), preferably with a neutral balance.

Counting system

1 short set to 4 games or a match of three short sets is the optimal scoring format at this stage.

Competition Format

Children still enjoy team competitions and doubles, but they are starting to play more individual competitions. The duration of the competition is from 3 hours to 2 days.

Venue of the competition

The competitions are held in a familiar environment, as this serves as a motivation for less confident children to continue participating in the competitions. Players are able to take more short trips to compete, some players are starting to take part in regional tournaments, and only the best compete in national championships.

The requirements of tennis competition on a standard court imply that players must have physical abilities to move around the court, and exercise control over the body in this dynamic environment. They already have an understanding of tactics. Children have a high percentage of shots hitting the court in different game situations, taking into account the position of the opponent on the court and their own hitting position. During the preparation for the competition, it is important to convince the child to learn to be more independent, to form the right attitude towards the warm-up, training, physical training and health.

This direction is focused on increasing the number of tennis players, ensuring their harmonious development and participation in competitions from an early age.

Tennis 10s is a way of presenting tennis training and competition for children aged 10 and under. Its principles are very simple:

1. create an optimal classroom environment

  • appropriate size court
  • slow balls
  • short rackets

2. hold age-appropriate competitions

  • shorter, multi-match formats and competitions
  • team and individual matches
  • simple counting system

and also children must serve, “hold” the ball and play on the score from the very beginning of the lesson!

TENNIS 10S Tournament Rules

TENNIS 10S is a competition for players aged 10 and under

The use of lightweight balls contributes to the formation of optimal hitting technique for the players to implement the necessary tactical decisions. All this is almost impossible on a standard-sized court.

Transition to play with a yellow (standard) ball

There is no specific age at which a player must start playing the yellow ball. Children are ready for a full-fledged game at an average of 10-12 years. If they have passed all three levels of mini-tennis, the transition will be more comfortable and harmonious. More talented kids who are ready for full-fledged tennis earlier can move on earlier. However, there remains the benefit of continuing to play at the green level to improve technical and tactical abilities. It is important that during the competition, the game provokes the child, and does not suppress him.

The central character of the Red Ball platform game is a small ball with a funny face. He lives in a fairy-tale world consisting of roads, paths, paths, corridors, avenues and other intricate structures that look like one giant labyrinth. The task of the protagonist is to collect all the stars and golden keys scattered across its expanses. But there is a force that prevents the baby ball from doing this.

In addition to the main character, evil gray squares live in a magical land. They hate the ball because it has no corners. Villains dream to lie in wait for the hated red ball and destroy it by throwing square bombs.

The gamer is required to help the hero overcome obstacles and protect him from insidious squares. Unfortunately, the game "Red Ball" is not designed for two, which means that you will overcome the difficulties yourself (well, at least you can try at least a hundred times in a row and for free). On the way, try to grab all the keys and stars, no matter how high they hang. It is important to be careful: you can and should collect golden keys, but blue ones are absolutely impossible. Each such key deprives the ball of the opportunity to cross any bridge. The remark is especially relevant for boys - they rarely pay attention to colors.

Other Adventures of Kolobok

We put together all the pieces new series games "Red Ball", which means that you have to play not only with the keys. Gray squares continue to intrigue small koloboks and come up with new atrocities. For example, they try to kidnap the hero's beloved or go to war against the spherical king. Only experienced gamers are able to destroy their cunning plans.

Control

To move the hero around the screen, use the arrow keys or the letters WASD, to jump - space. The controls in the game are simple and similar to those used in the classics of the platform genre - "Mario". Sometimes the baby ball will need additional skills. The inscription on the screen will tell you which buttons to activate them. On our website, the Red Ball series is available for free. So travel through the magical land with the baby ball as much as you want.
