On the last weekend of August, the main biathlon tournament of the summer, the World Championship, will be held in the Czech Republic. The party there is going to be decent, even the leaders of their national teams will come. And the leader of the Russian national team will also be, but this is not Shipulin.
The IBU is confident that the summer biathlon is the future, but so far it still looks more like a miserable semblance of winter biathlon. Or no longer?
Who, where, when
The world championship in summer biathlon will be held in Nove Mesto from 24 to 26 August. Athletes will run all three races on roller skis - sprint, pursuit and mixed relay. Until 2006, short crosses were run at the Summer World Cup, but now athletes cover distances identical to those at the World Cup. The organizers give the message that summer biathlon can be as mesmerizing as winter biathlon. Maybe even more attractive, and in general this is the sport of the future.
So far it doesn't turn out great.
One of the obvious reasons for this is that the organizers fail to gather a truly stellar cast of participants. The most serious attitude to the summer World Cup is in the countries of the CIS and Eastern Europe, but even there the compositions are far from optimal. Here, for example, Russia. There is Ekaterina Yurlova-Perkht, who must run all three races in the tournament. She is definitely the leader of the team. There is Yuri Shopin, Pyotr Pashchenko, Nikita Porshnev, but this is rather the second echelon of the men's team. Here, in general, that's all.
Of course, it will be interesting to watch the competitions of juniors and juniors, but such a poster will not attract a mass audience. This is more for us hardcore biathlon fans.
What about Shipulin?
The day before, having celebrated his 31st birthday, he continues to torment fans with uncertainty. The SBR understands that Shipulin is the only one in our country and they give him as much time as he needs. But Vladimir Drachev and the company, apparently, have not yet found final points of contact with Anton. One way or another, we will not see Shipulin in Nove Mesto.
But he has a wealth of experience playing at the summer world championships.
Shipulin won the mixed relay tournament three times. The last time it was last year in Tchaikovsky together with Ulyana Kaisheva, Svetlana Sleptsova and Alexei Volkov. We will not see any of them in the Czech Republic. The other two victories came in 2011 and 2012. In personal races at the summer World Championships, Anton has silver in 2017 and bronze in 2012. It is noteworthy that both tournaments were held in Russia. It was from 2011-2012 that progress began in Shipulin's career, which soon made him one of the three best biathletes in the world. It is quite possible that it was participation in the summer World Championships that played a positive role in this.
Were there any other stars at the Summer Worlds?
Undoubtedly. Ole Einar Bjoerndalen won silver and bronze in the sprint back in 1996 and 1997. In 2004, Zdenek Vitek won. In the rollerskiing era, Maxim Chudov, who is a multiple champion in summer biathlon. Other victors include Simon Fourcade, Michael Rösch, Dmitry Yaroshenko, Lukas Hofer, Ondrej Moravec, Vladimir Iliev, Martin Otchenash, Andrey Rastorguev.
Where are Martin Fourcade, the Boe brothers, Emil-Hegle Svendsen? Obviously top stars men's biathlon prefer a different winterization plan.
For women, the situation is similar. To put it mildly, not all the main actors of the World Cup are ready to spend their energy and emotions on the summer world championships. Although Magdalena Neuner did not disdain summer starts and won the World Cup in Oberhof in 2009. Kaisa Mäkäräinen, Dorothea Wierer, Julia Jima, Anna Frolina also successfully performed at the Summer World Championships.
It would also be great to see Gabriela Koukalova at the World Championships, but the story of her downtime continues to be mysterious.
When compiling the calendar, the key word remains with the organizers live broadcast and broadcast TV channels. Of course, the interests of broadcasters should coincide with the sports component. Natural conditions are also important - at almost all stages of the World Cup, unlike in Tyumen, there is no lighting in the stadiums, and therefore the organizers have to hold races in the morning or afternoon. In North America, the World Cup races will start very early, so the IBU expects severe cold. Therefore, men across the ocean will be the first to take to the track. The search for consensus on the start time of the 2019 World Cup in Östersund turned out to be especially intense. The leader of the national biathlon team Anton Shipulin will not compete at the first stages of the 2018/2019 Biathlon World Cup. The athlete is preparing for other competitions, and therefore the coaching staff decided to give way to the young. There will also be no stars of the past and the season before last, Maxim Tsvetkov and Anton Babikov, at the Cup. Athletes failed to pass the qualifying races.
Biathlon fans are looking forward to the start of the new season, but so far they are at a loss. Yes, calls to replace half of the team and let the youth go ahead instead of the already tired old-timers sounded everywhere on the Web, almost after every Cup run last season, but no one expected drastic changes. And they happened.
The composition of the Russian team for the 2018/2019 Biathlon World Cup is already known
The composition of the team this season was chosen quite openly - the stars of the domestic biathlon and novice athletes from the regions, also sent to the races in Kontiolahti, were on an equal footing. Shipulin did not participate in the selection - he was automatically given a place in the team as the best athlete last season, but he decided not to use this advantage. At least we won't see him in the first races of the new season. Perhaps the athlete will join the team at the last competitions.
By the way, there will be ten stages in the current season's Cup - nine directly from the World Cup and plus the races of the 2019 World Championship.
The coaching staff announced the composition of the Russian national team, selected at the qualifying starts:
Men: Dmitry Malyshko, Alexander Loginov, Evgeny Garanichev, Alexey Slepov, Matvey Eliseev, Eduard Latypov.
Women: Irina Starykh, Margarita Vasilieva, Ekaterina Yurlova-Perkht, Evgenia Pavlova, Kristina Ilchenko, Uliana Kaisheva.
As you can see, among the male half of the team there is only one new name - Eduard Latypov. We saw the rest of the athletes at the Cup stages in past seasons. As for the female half of the team, it was replaced, indeed, radically - three out of six girls have not yet competed at such a level.
Fans and experts assess the team's chances in the cup this season in different ways. Some say that without Shipulin it will be possible to watch the cup only out of interest, but without tension - ours, they say, will not shine, and Fourcade will collect all the medals, although he did talk about completion sports career. Changed my mind.
Others are sure that the guys have a chance to return the domestic biathlon to the desired level, because young does not mean unprofessional. Be that as it may, the first races of the first stage will show the situation. The Cup starts next Sunday, December 2.
Biathlon World Cup season 2018/2019 - stages where it will take place
In the current cup, Russia will not host the World Cup stages. But the races will take place unexpectedly in the USA and Canada - these countries have not hosted competitions of this level for a long time, and therefore they are preparing a warm and hospitable welcome for the athletes.
The Cup will run from December 2, 2018 to March 24, 2019. The World Championship will smoothly "fit" into the Cup and will allow athletes, if desired and necessary, to participate without interrupting the Cup races - the world championship will be held from March 7 to 17, 2019 in Östersund, Sweden.

It is impossible not to say that in Russia the World Cup will not be held until 2021 inclusive. This decision was finally made by the International Biathlon Union the day before, when competing plans for future seasons. By the way, this year the Russian Biathlon Union has every chance to return to the International Union due to the subsidence of hysteria after the doping scandal that broke out around a number of domestic athletes.

At the last shooting, I saw that the Czech began to quickly shoot two shots. We came together and began to prepare. And he had already fired the first shots, and I was just starting to aim. On his second shot, you could hear that he was smearing. Then he stopped. By the third shot, we were already equal in speed. Then I worked at my own pace, and he stood up - he understood that he had smeared a lot. And I got the shot.
The track here is quite difficult, working, the pulse is high everywhere. There are slopes, but you can’t rest much on them, they are small.”

Valeria Vasnetsova is the winner of the world championship in summer biathlon in the pursuit race.
Camila Zhuk from Poland is second, Czech athlete Marketa Davidova is third. Russian Anastasia Khaliullina moved from 16th place to fifth.
Valeria Vasnetsova shared her impressions of her victory: “Today is the third competitive day. I can't say that I feel worse. I felt normal from a distance. I managed to cope with the first rack, and on the second I associate two misses with psychology. It's still a contact race. I was lucky that my opponents also made mistakes. Today, August 26, the 2018 Summer Biathlon World Championship on roller skis ended in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic. On the final day of the tournament, pursuit races took place.
The men's pursuit was won by Czech Ondrej Moravec, who was second in the sprint yesterday, and his compatriot Michal Krcmar won silver today. The bronze medal of the main event of the season in summer biathlon was won by Ukrainian Artem Prima. Best result among the Russians, Nikita Porshnev showed, he is fifth, 56.3 seconds behind the leader. Another Russian Maxim Burtasov rounded out the top eight in today's race, losing 1 minute and 19.8 seconds to Moravec.
